There is virtually 0 chance Bergevin does a trade like this. Bergevin has a fetish for Finns, he won't trade one to bring another one in.

Habs should decline that imo. Danault's under good contract compared to Brassard who'd just walk after this season.

Taking away the UFA's that walk July 1st, it's basically Danault and a second for Maata. Horrible.

I think 1 for 1, Lek for Maata, would be a better deal. Even so bergy pass and wait for next year.

Maata is just a Reilly with more steady play. His contract is not that great and PIT fans complain about his awefull giveaways all the time....

I would offer a 2nd and Hudon. Top.

Or you don't take away Brassard cause he was in the offer ?
Breaks down like Brassard for the 2nd and Rielly, then Maatta for Danault.
Danault is slightly better than Brassard but Maatta is better than Rielly. The difference of Danault being better than Brassard is made up by the difference in Maatta being better than Rielly. Pittsburgh gets the 3C they need and Montreal gets the young left handed dman they need. Plus each team gets replacements for the main player they lost, and if Brassard being a UFA is an issue, well Montreal has longer to sign him and with him being from Quebec he may be more willing to sign.
I understand if you don't think it's 50/50 fair value (no trade ever is) but to say it's "horrible" is just flat out wrong.

IF HABS wanted Brassard, and they don't, they could just wait july 1st and GET IT FOR FREE. Until Brassard is signed he has no value for Montreal, try Winnipeg...

For the rest of the season, that suggested trade is pretty ok.

For the future, that trade is horrible, because they lose the main asset.

Generally teams are not built for the present day, unless you're a contender, which Habs is not. Therefore, the consequences of that move are pretty terrible in longer scale.

Of all the Maatta to MTL trades, this one makes the most sense. Good job.

Lehkonen is good player but Habs currently have a gluten of wingers and not many quality LHD. So this would be beneficial to both teams. Lehkonen's next contract should get him into the high two mils so the Habs would be taking on more cap but given that we have tons of it and that by default, dmen have more value than wingers so you'd have to concede a little there. IMO

Thanks. I also thought that this move would be beneficial for both participants, position-wise.

A French speaking 2C that produces offensively and is a good defender? Guarantee Montreal has some interest in that.
Or instead of waiting till July 1 (when the risk of him signing somewhere else is far greater) they get at the deadline for a playoff push. Brassard is also a very good playoff performer. Montreal's centre depth severely lacks playoff experience. Then Montreal sees how the fit is with Brassard and can judge his value better for a new contract. Teams get guys at the deadline all the time that they would like in free agency, those extra few months are a lot of time to talk new contract.

What main asset? The 2nd? .. they have the option to sign Brassard for the future and get that young NHL left handed dman that they need that's signed for term. They give up a bottom pairing dman and a 3C.. that doesn't exactly hurt their long term future when they also have guys like Domi and Kotkaniemi as the future 1C and 2C already

You mean Danault? LoL

You really dont get it, do you... Brassard will hit the market and sign wherever he wants. And Habs will have lost 2 centers in 6 months, just to take a chance of winning one playoff round. Horrible decision. NEXT.

Let's make a deal. Let's wait July first and IF Brassard signs with MTL, THEN Habs will trade you Danault for Maata.... No, wait, still not a fair deal.

A 3C for a top 4D? Sounds pretty fair to me. Habs may not make it cause they love danault, but the value is pretty good

If Maata was a top 4 dman, PIT would keep him. He is not. Danault is a 3rd liner playing on MTL 2nd line, as Maata is a 3rd pairing playing on PIT 2nd pairing.

He doesn’t fit our system and pens messed up signing Johnson. Had GMJR not signed that pylon pens would be able to keep maatta but due to cap, they’ll probably be forced to move him. He’s a good bottom 4 D meaning he can play anywhere from #3 to #6 depending the team.

#1- this is the first year he’s ever produced at that pace. He’s normally around a 40 point pace. Everyone on the Habs is having a career year.
#2- no way he’s even close to as good as Bergeron defensively haha

definitely not. He’s a very good player I’m not denying that. Similar to faska. but Bergeron is a hall of famer. Can’t start comparing him defensive game to an all time great
