It's all about cap space - Jets need to re-sign Laine, Connor, and hopefully Trouba or a replacement for him. That's likely $25M per year for those 3 alone. By moving Perrault they gain $4M in cap space for 2 years for a guy who is not a core piece going forward. They may not want Peca at all, Jets have a lot of promising forwards who need ice time.

Trade Trouba and have Niku step into the top 4 D then they won't need as much cap space, trading Niku would be a really dumb move by the Jets.

Good point - a lot depends whether Trouba can be convinced to stay at reasonable cost and win a few Cups. The Jets still control where his trade options are. Also the Jets have other good defense prospects coming up in Dylan Samberg, Tucker Poolman, and Logan Stanley.

Exactly, it's time to move on and the point of drafting and developing prospects is to eventually have them take roles on the team. Also both Niku and Kulikov like playing on the right side even though they're lefties so it's not like Trouba would have to be replaced by a NHL ready RHD, they could trade him for picks or a young defense prospect who's not quite yet ready for the NHL.

trade your left D and have your right D fill his spot ?

you fantasy league hockey era fans kill me sometimes .
Niku has 3 points in 11 NHL games we aren't even talking about a player on Trouba's level .Niku is more like a Mete then a Trouba (a long term project )

Niku is a future Jeff Petry style PP specialist who will take until he's 25+ to become worthy of being a #3 D and leader of the 2nd pair.
Trouba is being held down due to depth and when injuries occur he carries that D core on his back in Byflugliens place.

saying trade Trouba over Niku would be like me trading Domi over Shaw(it makes us worse not better )

Jets really are a great example of how to draft and develop prospects properly. They certainly don't rush their prospects. If only the Oil had a similar mindset they would not be such a mess.

Haha! He carries them on his back, you've gotta be kidding me! You must not watch a lot of Jets games, if anything Trouba is sucking the life out of the Jets powerplay since he's been put on the 1st unit. Maurice needs to put that experiment to an end cause Trouba isn't much of an offensive defenseman.
