Gonna go on a limb and say Wild win the trade. Victor Rask is having the worst year of his hockey career, but he is still a 40 point center who is great defensively.

Why??? Minny doesn’t even need centers and IMO there’s a pretty big difference in Niederreiter and Rask. Carolina made out like Kings on this one.

Minnesota gets a younger player + less AAV. Both usually hover around 40 points a season.

Hah Minny's thinking process was probably center>wing. A drastic mistake on their part. Certain positions seem to be overvalued than others. The better player is the better player.

Minny may be thinking of trading Staal and Coyle....If they do, they will need a centerman. This is the only reason I can think of why they did it. They do save on cap as well....

I don't see this trade as lopsided as others.

Over the last 3 years...

Nino - 227 GP / 63G / 69A / 0.58 PGP
Rask - 233 GP / 51G / 73A / 0.53 PGP

Production is roughly the same. Rask plays a premium position and is solid in the dot at a career 51.1% FO win. I'd say it's a pretty even deal.

Agreed, and Rask is younger and is being paid less. Even if you include this year the difference is only .5 PPG vs .56 PPG since 2015-16. Niederreiter has also played on a playoff team while Rask has played on a bottom feeder.

Rask has been Lucic level slump thats why people see it as one sided Rask might break out at somepoint but has been poor over the last 2 years

Well, this is a pretty fair deal for once. Rask can take faceoffs, just like Lindholm does for Calgary. And just that can be a boost for the Wild. And Nino brings to the Hurricanes what they have lacked in recent years: scoring.

I just wanted to point one thing out. People were saying risk was garbage before this trade and he was overplayed but now this one for one has happened people are saying Minnesota won which makes no sense because they lost a goal scorer and got back a good defensive player and they honestly don’t need defensive forwards. Besides who honestly though task was a good player before this

Huh, I didn't see this coming. Canes win, largely. Rask is a bust IMO. Is a crappy 3rd liner. Nino can easily go on any first line in the league.

Disclaimer: The Hurricanes are one of the few teams I invest significant emotional energy in, so this may be a slightly colored opinion.

When Rask was signed to that 6yr, $4mil extension, a lot of people looked at his trajectory curve and defined him as a #1 center in the making. Obviously, that has not happened. He does do some things well (he's adept at entering the zone, and he makes pretty good transition passes from defense to offense). As many have pointed out, he's a positive faceoff man (though I don't think he's positive enough to make a consistent/noteable difference).

However, players in this league that can consistently score the puck and drive play are extremely valuable. Nino has had a strong relative CF% over the years in Minnesota, and is still in the black. Additionally, he continues to score points, and is on a 40-point pace in what many would consider a bad season for him. Meanwhile, Rask is in an epic slump and on pace for a total nearing 20 points on the season (he did miss a significant chunk of time with finger surgery) and has had the bottom completely fall out in terms of shot production on the ice. While Nino is not a center, the Canes trio of Aho-Staal-Wallmark has proven to be more than serviceable, and Rask was easily the odd man out. More scoring talent (in general, but especially with what seems to be the imminent departure of Ferland) is a great pickup for that.

I can't say the same thing in Minnesota, a team not lacking centers. Theoretically, it's possible to see Rask filling the 3C spot in Minnesota, but that seems like a ceiling, more than a floor.

Ultimately I think what would be considered a good season for Rask is probably the floor for what Nino can accomplish. The Wild get some credit for clearing a little space, but the Hurricanes don't get any demerits: they have lots of cap space to use.

I think the Canes win this one in a walk, barring significant injury to NN.

Rask is a good player and remember he cut his finger with a knife and has only played 26 games since coming back. I agree this isn't a very good trade for Minnesota. I think Niederreiter is a much better player. But Rask is a decent 3rd line centre.

I'm not sure why people think MN isn't lacking centers? They have:
-Koivu, 35 and 1 year left on his deal.
-Staal. 34, UFA at the end of the season.
-Fehr, 33, UFA at the end of the season. (on IR)
-JEE, 21, and hasn't shown much yet.
-Coyle, 26, 1 year left on his deal. He's also a better fit at wing.
-there really isn't anything in the pipeline that is even near NHL ready, if ever.

Nino is an advanced stats darling, but he doesn't pass the eye test anymore. He's really not very good defensively. He basically turned into Chris Stewart after his injury last year. I've been hoping all year that he was just in a funk and would snap out of it. His play got him demoted to the 4th line a couple of times this year, it's where he would have been playing last night if he hadn't of gotten traded. I do hope he returns to his pre-injury form of the last couple of seasons, and all he really needed was a change of scenery. He used to be fun to watch on the ice, this year he's been a comedy of errors.

I think the trade is fair and could swing either way depending on how the players fit with their new teams. It fills a center need for MN and they traded from a position of depth. It also gives them more lineup flexibility by moving Coyle back to wing, and it opens up the possibility to trade Coyle or Staal later this year. Car gets some needed offense on a buy lower player.

You make a good point. In my mind Nino is the better player (I voted for CAR above) but looking at their career averages is interesting. Per 82 games, each scores like this:

NN: 82, 18-20-38
VR: 82, 15-24-39

That's closer than I had thought - even for goal-scoring. Too bad Chiarelli didn't get involved with Fenton earlier this year, Ryan Strome for Niederreiter 1-for-1 would have pleased a lot of EDM fans. Strome's career numbers per 82:

RS: 82, 14-23-37

However, both Rask and Strome were having terrible seasons prior to being traded, so in my mind they weren't worth what Nieddereiter is. Nino had a slow start but has picked it up recently and is now on pace to hit 41 points.

This shows me that the Wild don't believe in Eriksson-Ek. The fact that they'd get another center means that they don't think he can fill some of the void Staal is going to leave. But this is horrible work by Fenton still. He's on pace for 19 points over an 82 game season, and they gave up a guy who will end the season with more goals than Rask would points.
