I wouldn't label Pesce as an "excellent" defenseman, he's more suited for a top 4, shutdown type of role on a team, and doesn't produce enough offensively at the moment to be a true top 2 defenseman. The 2 year deal for Kapanen is a bridge deal since he'll be coming off his entry level contract. Furthermore the Canes have an abundance of D-men and a major shortage on goal scoring which will come at a premium, Kapanen already has 14 goals and 25 points in 39 games this year despite being slotted to third line duties since Nylander was resigned. It's a need for need trade for both teams and the second rounder could become an effective NHL player in the years to come (just look at Aho if you need further justification). The ceiling for Kapanen is quite high especially if he's played with the other two Finns, Aho and Teravainen.
