Cap won't be $83M ($82M or $82.5M) and Kap is worth at least $3.5M and maybe $4m or slightly over. This is the problem with Tor if they keep Nylander. They will have to let Kap walk plus find a magical way to get rid of Horton's contract because you can't LITR him until the 1st day of the season putting the Leafs over the cap by too much day 1.

Kapanen is not worth 4 mil right now, look at morrissey thats the contract he will likely get or maybe less as hes not so relied on. If he wants to be full time on this roster or in the NHL for that matter he takes this deal. Johnsson also will be closer to 1 mil, hes showed nothing for consistency hence why he took the 700k and change right away last summer as a qualifying offer. He has a long time to prove

Kapanen is not worth 3.5-4 million. Max would be 3 on his next deal, which would be a bridge contract 2-4 years. He`s had 25 good games so far as a top6/9 forward. If he can do it for 2-3 years then he can get 4+ a season

He's putting up numbers just like Dzingel and nobody is arguing he's going to get a $3.5M to $4M contract as a UFA. If Kap keeps up this pace, he will look to see what Dzingel gets and try to mirror that.

Regardless, Leafs are in cap trouble if they sign Nylander as you can see and will have to let Kap walk.

See my post above.

Thats fine but with zero leverage he will not be making 3.5-4 mil. His stats are inflated playing with AM

Actually, the Leafs won’t have much leverage if they sign Nylander given the cap ceiling; they won’t have much choice but to let him go. A cap strapped team can’t strongarm a RFA to accept a lowball offer for the sole purpose of fitting under the cap or the league will step in; on this scenario that would be a $1.5M offer or so as this Armchair GM here doesn’t understand the rules of LITR.

Also find it funny that with every Nylander trade proposed on here Leafs fans defend Nylander’s stats but when talking about Kap’s stats, they are overinflated because of AM? Lol too funny

He's on pace for 32 goals. If he scores 30, negotiations start at 5

This is a totally realistic roster.. I agree with the type of money allocated to RFA players. Personally I would then trade nylander for defenseman, maybe linholm withanaheim or Slavin with Carolina. Your defence is weak here and you can sign Ennis to man the fourth line.

Well done

He is not going to score 30, its hard for me to explain this to you as you do not watch every game and only look at a stats sheet

Not well done. Leafs are above the cap. This scenario can't work for mainly 3 reason;
1) Cap is not going to be $83M
2) LITR rules aren't being followed meaning the Leafs can't put Horton on LITR until after the 1st day of the season and going into day 1 can't be over the cap more then a percentage of Horton's salary.
3) Kap will need more then $3M.

If he scores over 20 and has 40 points, he will be worth $3.5M to $4.5M. Too many forwards get similar money with those stats.

Too many are forced into bridge deals, which he will as he is a 3rd liner for us. He is also an RFA without options, Teams do not just overpay what then have to for no reason. I have no clue how this generation of hockey fan thinks these days

Johnsson will be luck to break 1 mil so there is money there, you are also wrong about Kapanen. Look at what Arvidsson took scoring 30+

Still doesn't solve the LITR problem.

Plus Arvidsson got $4.25M and that was 2 seasons ago to when Kap needs to sign and the cap has been risen as well as every players pay that's signed since.

Try. Why isn’t he going to score 30? Seems to be a very opportunistic player to me. Why is he scoring now and he won’t later?

Kapanen is currently on pace for 30 goals and 56pts. considering that he'll be on a line with Matthews and Marleau for the rest of the season (if Nylander doesn't sign in the next few hours). Odds are he'll reach those stats.

even if you try and do a bridge deal, that aav will be $4mil+ easy.

Cap trouble, simple solution, trade Kadri, you shouldn't need to pay your 3rd line C over 4 million and he has a very attractive contract and still has skills to be a team's 2nd line C. You'll save 3 million by downgrading your 3rd line C. The Leafs should see if they can entice Miro Aaltonen back to the NHL, he looked pretty good as a bottom line C.

Toronto owns his rights and will not pay that much, thus he will not make that much

*going to exaggerate for arguments sake*
With that logic why don't you just offer him $1mil, Leafs own his rights, right? The player has no power whatsoever.....
*exaggeration over*

doesn't work that way, the player will still be without a contract. if the entire league would pay someone like Kapanen $4-5mil aav on a bridge deal, and the leafs say "screw that, we're only giving him $3mil aav" it does 2 things:

1. It hurts the relationship with the player (see Nylander as perfect example), and increases the odds of an eventual separation of both parties.
2. It makes negotiations worse / more difficult for future players. Consistently low balling is bad for business (hypothetical situation: Sandin becomes a top 4 D before the end of his ELC, if the team has a past history of consistently low balling players, Sandin and his agent will try and start with higher demands in hopes to even out negotiations, thus making the whole process a lot longer, and looping back to problem #1.

Leafs are right to be doing it to Nylander imo. but if they keep doing it to every good player coming off an ELC in the organization, it's gonna hurt them in the long run 100%.

They do it to every player. Every team does it. There are no feeling in negotiating. He's not going to make the money you are saying because of a 20+ game stretch on the top 6 like

Send Horton to Arizona and give then Leivo and Gauthier or Rosén and Gauthier for taking the contract.

They have Holland coming off after this year at just over 5 million and so they need someone they don’t actually pay to replace him.

LTIR PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!

You should be familiar with this move from hawks dumping Hossa.

As for Kapanen wanting to be paid, he is RFA and was barely making the team out of camp if nylander had been signed. He will sign for 1.5 - 2.5.
