Description

Came up with the ultimate solution so that we don't have to see another Nylander thread for a few months:

CANES OFFER SHEET NYLANDER!

Super simple: Canes offer him $7.5x7, and either give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd, or the Leafs match and put us all out of our misery for a few months.

Does this leave the Canes and Leafs on bad terms? Sure, but they don't typically deal together anyway, so worse things could happen. Does it leave you on bad terms around the league? Possibly, but why not try to re-write the book if you're Carolina.

The point of this being: I can't wait until Dec. 1st so this clown show is over.

Or instead, you can use the offer sheet calculator and realize the compensation for that offer is 4 1st rounders. Also I would imagine the Leafs would just match that offer. It would (as long as it isn't pretty much just bonus money in year 1) have a huge cap hit this year and fall a little under 7 million for the cap hit in years 2-7, the Leafs can make that work for sure.

I am not so sure, Nylander was an 8th overall pick and he'd certainly help Carolina get back in the hunt for a playoff spot. With the young talent they have they'll eventually turn it around and those 4 picks could be 4 late first rounders and the chances of finding a replacement for Nylander in the late 1st round isn't exactly easy.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here, but 7.5 falls in the 1st+2nd+3rd category in every single calculator I use...

Not all sites are created equal I guess. I am not a frequenter of Pro Hockey Rumours but I imagine it would be equally as dumb as Hockeybuzz.

In the new convention, you gotta take the total amount of the contract and make it for 5 years. So your contract gives Willy 52,5 millions, so 10,5 on a 5 years term. The compensation is now ruled in the 10 148 302 bracket and it is 4 first round pick

Offer sheet calculators are weird. I believe they calculate the number based on a five year term.

So while 7.5 over five years would be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for compensation, the two extra years bring the AAV over 5 years to closer to 10.5 which is four 1ts.

That's my understanding it anyway. I could be wrong.

no one ever factors in the bonuses on an offer sheet lol.. its always the baseline and they forget to add the bonuses. Thats not the correct compensation on that contract.
