Doesn't give them much cap space, but they get a bit more, and it'll probably help them sign Nylander.

A bit of cap space and a pick for a depth D, I'd call that fair.

Carrick is worth more than a 7th easily.

But this was a last minute deal and Dubas had no leverage. I guess Dubas wasn’t expecting Ozhiganov to take a spot otherwise this should of been dealt with months ago.

Atleast they got something. They were going to put him on waivers until Dallas offered something

Carrick has potential, but probably needed a new team. Win-win IMO.

Carrick has a better chance of providing value than a 7th so Dallas wins , but in the end if you have a young guy who isn't going to get to play, I think you need to trade them out just to give them a fair chance. Funny thing is that Carrick had to battle Polak for 3rd pairing ice time over the last two years, gets a new contract and traded to a new team so he can now battle Polak for 3rd pairing ice time in a warmer climate.

@Banks @Jarvis

Has Carrick actually been placed on waivers then? If so, what happens if he gets claimed?

No he wasn't, Leafs PR tweeted that he was, but it never ended up happening

To sign nylander, this is not enough. There is no way they can sign nylander to a longterm deal without getting into cap hell or parting with one of the members of their new triumvirate. They need to move marleau and horton’s horror of a contract, but I doubt thered be any takers without the leafs having to give up loads of picks and stuff.

This is all about freeing up additional cap space. TOR needs all the extra $$$ they can get in order to sign Nylander. A depth defenseman means very little in this perspective. They need Nylander signed ASAP and this makes them one step closer. A+ for Dubas here.

This is literally THE WORST time to trade a player as there are literally hundreds of players available for free on the waiver wire. Consequently, the value of players such as Carrick are depressed as there are going to be at least a couple of players approaching his skill & role available on the waiver wire (although it is unusual for a young player who played as many games as he did last year to get waived).
Obviously Dubas and Co have seen enough of him to know he isn’t a key piece moving forward so, rather than lose him for nothing - which is what WOULD have happened had this trade not taken place - gives the Leafs some asset, no matter how middling it is. They must also have been impressed with Ozhiganov to know he will adapt to the NA game and ostensibly take Carrick’s appt in the lineup.

It’s possible that only 1 or 2 teams had interest in keeping Carrick on their 23-man (which Dallas will now have to or we can get him back) but that’s all it takes to lose someone on waivers for nothing. So he likely approached x and y teams and got the one willing to make a deal.

Overall a fair trade. Dallas didn’t give up anything of much value to get a younger D-Man that can play in their Top-6. Toronto recoups something rather than losing him for nothing.

Your first line is the answer. He was headed for waivers before Dallas offered something. It was lose him for a 7th or lose him for free

Don’t think this has squat to do with Cap or salary issues. Carrick’s 300k isn’t going to make much difference (the other $1M can be buried in the AHL which is what it would have been once he cleared waivers). Rather it was a way to recoup something rather than losing him for nothing.

Leafs would lose him for free on waivers. They had no choice. But they should trade him months ago, like Daryl said.

In a vacuum I would call this a fair trade, but since we aren't in a vacuum I have to call this a win for Dallas, although only because the Leafs lost. I think Carrick is probably a better player than Jerabek, is younger and is a right hand shot which is more rare (94 RHD played 20 or more games last season, while 146 LHD did the same), so the Leafs getting a lower pick for him than EDM got for Jerabek, on the same day, makes this a loss for Toronto.

Keeping or trading Carrick doesn't make any difference cap wise. Carrick could be demoted to the Marlies and he would just be about 200,000 cap hit. Ozhigkov has base salary 925,000 and potential bonuses of 925,000 this year, so he could be more expensive than Carrick to the Leafs.
Fact is Babcock/Dubas thought Carrick has slipped to the 5th right side Dman behind Zaitsev, Hainsey, Ozzie and Holl. Plus the Marlies are loaded with good and numerous Dmen. Borgman, Rosen, Nielsen, Lavorde, Liljegren, Holl and I believe Sandin. Just no room for Carrick. IMO he wasn't good enough either. But good luck to him, he seems like a good guy.

I've been a Carrick fan for a while, so it's a little disappointing to see him fail to stick again. Should be a good battle between him, Polak, Johns and Honka for ice time on the right side behind Klingberg

With all those 7th picks we have now, i hope TML will only draft Swedes so we fish a new Zetterberg out of it......
