If he can play like he did in 16-17 or better for all 4 seasons of this contract this is a good signing

Don't forget that he was a 20 goal scorer for the past two seasons and he has the energy to surprise people once again.
He can slot into every trio imaginable. Maybe the term is too long, but to claim a player on waivers and to unlock his true potential is a work of genius (rare) by Marc Bergevin and the coaching staff.
He is the best kind of depth player imaginable. I'm sure lots of teams would love to have him.

I love Paul Byron and his energy and his goal scoring. 4 is a year too long but he's just so fun to watch.

I think this is a good signing for MTL. He's quick, can kill penalties, and has scored 20 in the past 2 years. Can also play all 3 forward positions.

I was expecting a $3mil AAV. the guy can play all forward positions, plays #1 PK unit, generates on average a couple breakaways a game, and is a consistent 20 goal scorer. 400k over my expectations is fine all things considered, doubt if ever there's a cap issue in MTL over the next 5 years, it won't be this contract.

Love the guy, good contract. Super fast, plays all 3 forward positions (even took some time as the #1 centre, although that was due to the injuries and poor play of his teammates), always a threat to score on the PK, and plays a robust game despite being the smallest guy on the ice. The cap for now keeps going up and Montreal has so far not been able to lure any big free agents to fill their abundant cap space, so might as well spend it on the best of their own.

I absolutely love Paul Byron. He's a solid depth player. DEPTH PLAYER. He WAS underrated. We should of kept it that way. Should of tried to get him on a bargain. No more than 2-2.5 mil a year. You won't see any team win a cup with depth players paid almost 4m a year...

A solid move by Bergevin.

Wow. Writing that was harder than I thought it would be. The AAV for a 20+ goal scorer is spot on. He will only be 32 when the final year of the contract kicks in so I don’t have as much concern for the term, unlike others. While the Habs are “reloading” they have to keep some complimentary veteran pieces on hand to flesh out their Top-9. Gallagher & Byron make a solid foundation on which to build their forward ranks. (Their defence tho - that’s a whole other story).

Meanwhile, Calgary is eating $1.5M until 2022 for Troy Brouwer.

Bergevin gets judged too much for the PK/Weber deal. His asset management is top notch.

I agree 100%, the money is fine but I would’ve only given him two years

I like Byron but I voted "No". I would have rather they continued with the youth movement and tried to cash in on Byron at the deadline.

He's a really good all-around player and the money and term is right if he stays healthy.

We need someone to mentor the young kids and Byron is one of them. Their are tons of guys who should go before Byron

4 years (5 including this year) is far too long for a guy who was on waivers a couple seasons ago. not a fan of this deal at all. he had a career high 17.5% shooting percentage last year. habs wouldve been MUCH better off trading him at the deadline for a pair of picks. bad move

He's already 29 years old, and most likely not getting any better (I typed younger at first). No way is Byron worth $3.4M AAV when he's 33-34 years old. For now, it's OK. I love the dollar amount, but for 3 years instead of 4.

Don't forget the Sergachev/Drouin deal. That one really stings...and will continue to sting as Sergachev becomes an elite Defenseman.

Hush up. If Bergevin would have traded the 9th overall pick for Drouin, people would be calling him a God.

What dman wouldn't look good on that roster behind Hedman & McDonagh!?!

Have some insight, kiddie.

He didn't trade the #9 pick for Drouin. Sergachev projected as a future Norris candidate at the time of the trade while Drouin, a 3 year pro at the time, had a career high of 53 points despite playing on one of the league's most elite offensive teams. There's no defending this trade. It's less defensible than the Subban/Weber trade. True #1 D's are a precious commodity in the NHL and they had 2 of them. Now they have zero and they're at the bottom of the league standings. Coincidence?

He is capable of 20 goals a year and is one of the faster skaters in the league, He can slot anywhere in the lineup and can play top PP and top PK time

This guy has been deserving this for awhile now. He is such a workhorse. Since getting claimed on waivers by MTL from CGY way back when he has really been solid defensively and offensively. Good signing!
