Miles Wood has signed a new contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Great deal for both, more so team as he’s a rfa still at contract end. Ray Shero is the man.

One of the 20 best contracts signed this offseason. Locks up a complimentary middle-6 forward at a very reasonable AAV. The Cap Hit is 0.5M to 1M more than a 1 or 2 year contact but it will be much lower that what it would have otherwise been, 3 and 4 years down the road. Even if Wood doesn’t improve a great deal more, a solid 20+ goal scorer for under 3M is great any way you cut it.

For a four-year deal I figured he would’ve got around 3.3 million a year. This is a good deal for the devils

Compare Tom Wilson to Milkes Wood. Wood scored 19G last season while playing in a bottom six role for NJD. Wilson scored only 14G playing almost the entire season w/ Ovechkin and Kuznetsov. Wilson got $5.16M for six years while Woody got $2.75M for 4 years.
Sure, Wilson won the Cup w/ WASH, but double the money??? No way! Great deal by Ray Shero...again.

I think that's the wrong way to look at it. There isn't enough track record to say one way or the other. Don't forget the season before he played 60 games only scored 8 goals and 17 points while racking up 86 Penalty minutes. Almost 3 mil a year for that is kind of harsh.
He signed a lower deal because no one knows what they really have yet. Is he last years player or is he two years ago player. He could be either, he could be better. Kind of a sell high situation.
We won't know if this is a good deal till next year or so. He was right not to buy high.

Almost everyone on this site agrees that the Wilson deal was ridiculous. He was rewarded for winning the Cup! It's hard to speculate, but Wood probably would've doubled Wilson's offensive production had he played on the Devil's top line ;last season.

Wilson got paid because he's 6'4 and like 230lbs and willing to go on the ice and intentionally hurt other players changing the "pace" of the game. Period.

HAHAHA! Every time he "hurts" other players he gets suspended. Wood is almost as physical as Wilson, who was way, way overpaid. The game has changed. It's no longer 1995. Wilson's style is obsolete. Wood is much faster and far more skilled. And he comes at half the price.

really? He knocked Wennberg out the series with the blue jackets nothing happened to him. But that changed the series. Up to that point CBJ was 2-0. But without one of their best centers really there it fell apart. But go on and tell me what the league does and does not do and what works. He's a POS, who intentional hurts players and they paid him for it. Period.

I'm not disputing who Wilson is or why WASH thinks he's an effective enforcer, I just think they paid him too much. He's a less skilled version of Milan Lucic. How'd Lucic do last season? The less physical the game gets, the more irrelevant guys like that become. Wilson brings a lot of value for skill players like Ovi and Kuznetsov, but at over $5M AAV I'd rather have someone like Patric Hornqvist-a guy who plays physical AND puts up big offensive numbers (29G last season).

Wilson doesn't become "irrelevant" until the league does something about head hunting. Period.
When your teams best players leave on a stretcher because of him, you'll under stand that.

"The game has changed. It's no longer 1995." ABSOLUTELY true!! But... they won the cup because of this style of play so this style of play still has a huge impact. It's not all about the points or skill, it's about W's and I don't know why nobody understands that about Wilson. Overpaid yup, but very important player. Having only goal scorers on a team doesn't happen, and anyway, Washington already has enough skilled and fast superstars.

He had a huge impact...no question about it. I just think it's difficult to quantify what he does since his value doesn't show up on the scoreboard. Also, if WASH lost the Cup Final, how much would Wilson have signed for? No doubt he got a bump from the big win.

yup you're right. I think though that them winning shows it doesn't always need to show up on the scoreboard. 1 cup > all their great regular seasons over the past 5 years, and if they were to get another in the next span of Wilson's contract, the other years shouldn't be a concern even though he will not perform up to the level of his contract.
