Description
Now i get that its day one but from what i saw and babcocks comments after day 1 kap looks like a player that can play in the top 6 right now and flourish. I get trading nylander would upset a few players and fans but it would also send a message that if you want to be overpaid this it not the team that will do that. Nylander for a right handed dman with eite talent will help this team long term. Also before anyone asks i do think Gauthier can make this roster. People forget even though he played last season he was comming off a very nasty knee injury and may not have been in top form due to that. My high school friend played university hockey and had the same injury and even though he got back for the following season told me then he didn't have all his mobility and confidence back in that knee til the following season. So though im not make an excuse he may just now be in true game shape and i do think he can be that shutdown pk forward for this team if he keeps playing this way.

Teams aren't going to trade for Nylander....unless he's a signed Nylander. Do any teams want to pay him 8m?

A team like edonton actual could if they traded klefbom, something and 2nd lets say
But 8mill is way to much. I would go no higher than 6.75

I would try to give him a 1 year 7.5 prove it contract

I think a team that need a wing and have alot of dman could do the trade without a contract in place. But no matter what the leafs can't give him 8 it will hurt the team longterm. And to be honset if kap fills in for nylander and put up similar numbers than the leafs will probably have the leverage to get him to come down to earth on his denand or get him to take a bridge contract.

Why not Nurse and a 2nd for nylander. But if it a short term contract it should be round 6 mill for 2 years and by that time they will have cap and he will be more proven.

Nylander is under Leafs NHL control for five years. So unless he wants to play years in Europe, and lose big money and opportunity, he's going to be playing in the NHL soon.
A bridge contract for Nylander is anything for 1 to 4 years. So yes there is an good chance a bridge deal is signed. But obviously the two sides haven't agreed on bridge as of now, or else it would have been a done deal.

Ah yes, the "trade Nylander for every right-handed D in the league" conversation. I hope when he signs a 6-year deal this talk will die down.

I hope he does the issue is he is not budging on wanting 8 million per. I hope you can agree that based off every similar player in this league it is an complete overpayment and if he more or less draws the line at 8 million per it might be the leafs only choice if he doesn't want to take less. But if he come down if he AAV he wants then there is not issue.

I think Nylander is going to be something special for a long time, I personally have no problem giving him 64 million but that'll only happen if it's a 7 or 8-year deal which I don't see.

Or I guess it would only add up 64 million if it was 8 years lol my bad.

The issue is not signing him to 64 mill over 8 its how does ot effect marner and matthews contracts. If they give nylander 2 million over value than marner will want 9 and matthews 13 which at that point this team will not be able to have the depth to win cups and we are back to the 90's with a team that has alot of talant but not enough depth to win cups. So though it is easy to say give him what he wants it will make an already difficult situation cap wise impossible and they would need to trade one of the 3 to be a cup challenger.

I just don't think we are necessarily going to be a team with a stacked defense and that's fine, many cup winning teams weren't. Unless we get lucky through drafting. Also, If Nylander were to get 8 x 8 I think Marner & Matthews would just be happy that their friend got paid more than anything I don't think they will be looking at it from a business standpoint, personally. Matthews number is sorta set I feel anyway it'll probably be the same AAV as the Tavares contract just on an 8-year deal.

I kinda think other GMs are looking at this contract scenario and are hoping the Leafs "are right". Edmonton started this unprecedented signings by inking guys coming of their ELC to expensive long term deals.
Just recently. Kucherov and Stamkso even Tavares did not sign monster first time RFA deals.
We really don't know the offering from both sides....don't believe what is said publicly. I if Nylander is "asking too much" from a historical perspective, that's his right too.

The trouble with an expensive 7.5m one year deal, the team has to offer him 7.5m the following year to retain his rights. Let's say he doesn't have good year, and the team doesn't offer 7.5m....he's a UFA.

He is still an rfa next year. If he doesnt have a good year then flip him again
