A true playoff team, just short of Stanley Cup contenders

Description
Made a mistake with the salary cap. It should be 83M$, not 8.3M$. So the Devils have a cap hit of 70.8M$ and 12.2M$ of cap space in 2019-2020, in this scenario.

Zacha have a 45pts 2018-2019 season and NJD decides to bridge him.

Woods and Stantini are signed before the 2018-2019 training camp.

The Faulk trade happens in January 2019.

Kinkaid leaves the Devils to become a starter somewhere else.

McGinn is a good veteran, responsable defensively, capable of chipping in offensively. He's a nice depth addition.

M.McLeod will play the wing for the first 2 seasons of his career (2018-2019 & 2019-2020), but will soon (at the end of the '19-'20 season) take Zacha's spot as the team #2 centerman, pushing Zacha down to the #3 spot and making Zajac a trade/buyout candidate for the summer of 2020.

I think it is highly unlikely that Butcher gets that much money.

It's a risk on NJD's part, but those kinds of deals have been real steals for some teams in the past. Lots of money for the first 2 years, then it becomes a steal. Think of M.Scheifele, J.Tavares, S.Jones, T.Seguin, N.MacKinnon, T.Hall, A.Barkov, L.Couture, D.Hamilton...on a long term contract (7-8 years), he's getting that kind of money if he only repeats the year he just had.

Jesper Bratt as 1RW is really questionable.
2LW was sub-ppg in the OHL.
Starting goalies is coming off of back-to-back seasons of negative GSAA.
Yeah, I'm not penciling them in for a deep run. Faulk's a good add, Butcher's terrific, but this team needs a lot more work.

I feel like this team is the Minnesota of the East. A lot of really good, above average players. But no real superstar besides Hall. Deep playoff run looks doubtful.

Yeah I do think they miss the playoff by 2-3 points in '18-'19, but it'll be a great learning year for all young players, where I expect Zacha, Stantini and Woods to make good progression. They'll be back in the playoffs for '19-'20 and might even win a round by surprising a higher seed team, but they're no contenter yet. In 3 years time, with a better goaltender (M.Blackwood is coming up) and the natural progression of all the youth (watch out for Hischier, he's gonna establish himself as a very skilled first line center by then), they might just be!

Right now, you're right. Just give em time. Hischier will be an elite centermen in 2-3 years, Butcher will become a #1 d-men too, M.McLeod/J.Anderson/M.Woods at least one of them will become a real strong top 6 player for NJD (60pts/ year player). This team just needs time to properly developp.

Still a fringe playoff team. Hischier's point total will likely climb but who other than Hall and Hischier are going to score more than 50 points?

Palmieri is capable of doing it right this season. Johansson can too if he stays healthy (only this season since I'm letting him walk in the 2019 summer).

Of course they're still a fringe team, this season. This ACGM is a forecast of the 2019-2020 season, so by then, I think Zacha & Butcher will do it (score 50 pts) and maybe Woods will too (I really like his play style and think he'll breakout in the next 2 seasons).

With steadier defense and a consistent goalie, they'll be a threat (in 2 years time minimum).

Basically every player you named MUST do what you think or else you stay a fringe team. Your bottom 9 are questionable at best.

Santini's 23, aka next year is probably his peak. Blackwood had a .882 sv% in the AHL (and a .907 the year before). Probably not better than Schneider. They'll improve, but more adds are gonna need to happen. Palmieri and Hall will be at the beginning of their declines, too. I'm bearish.

Since when do D-MAN peak at 24? First time I hear this in my 25 years of closely following hockey...

M.Blackwood is 21 years old, Dude. Give him time! I did say he's coming up in 3 years, right? Goalies take more time than other positions. They usually are NHL ready around 24 to 26 years old.

Palmieri is easily 50 points if healthy. His 2.92 S/gp puts him on the verge of scoring 30 goals, too.
Butcher might, given Faulk as his partner (Faulk likely will)
Johansson can if healthy.
The issue is that outside of Hall and Palmieri, they don't really have another 60 point scorer.

Rob Vollman, in the book Stat Shot: The Ultimate Guide to Hockey Analytics: "“Most players hit their peak age by age 24 or 25 then decline gradually until age 30, at which point their performance can begin to tumble more noticeably with the risk of absolute collapse by age 34 or 35.”

Blackwood has one season of > .910 sv% with >5 gp in total at any level. I remain bearish.

https://hockey-graphs.com/2017/03/23/a-new-look-at-aging-curves-for-nhl-skaters-part-1/ Source for quote, and some aging curve stuff. Dmen peak at 23-25.
