Too much. Jonathan Quick had three 30+ win seasons, a Stanley Cup, and a Conn Smythe trophy and he signed for less than $6M. Hellebuyck has had one quality season in his career and didn't even carry his team to the Finals. Sure, he could turn into the next Henrik Lundqvist, but he could also be the next Cristobal Huet. Shoulda bridged him for one more year. He would have been a RFA at the end of next season and then you can be sure this season wasn't a fluke. Then you can give him his payday.

Just makes Matt Murray at 3.75 that much better. Not saying its a gross over payment but 6.1 for 1 solid season.... I guess we will wait and see.

3 years later, likely the best contract among goalies, maybe with/behind Gibson.

That may be true, but it was still a poor decision at the time.

He was coming off a career high, but possibly fluky season in 2017-18, and they gave him a huge payday based on that one year. The following season, his numbers were average (2.9 GAA, .913 SV%). If they did as I suggested and bridged him for a year, then signed him to a long-term extension at age 26 (still an RFA), they would have gotten him for a lower AAV. Sure, his contract looks good now (I don't know that I'd agree it's league's best value, but it's certainly more than fair), but it would have looked even better if they had waited.

It wasn’t a fluke, he literally won the Vezina in 2019-2020

I get that, but there was no way they could know that in 2018.

Tbh, I’d rather this contract over Vassys, If Winnipeg can get some better/truer Defenceman, Hellebuyck would be a pure Brickwall
