So I saw something on Lighthouse Hockey that may explain this.
By giving him four years, nobody will want to pluck him off waivers. Thus, Johnston can shuttle between the AHL and NHL as the team pleases, and he won't count against the cap at just $1 million. It makes some sense, but it doesn't explain why the contract is a one-way, nor does it explain the high cap hit relative to the role he will play.
