At the trade deadline, Gagner, Nilsson and MDZ would be shipped. Hutton too, if possible. Gaudette would slide into Gagner’s spot while Demko would take over in net. And if the Leafs haven’t found their coveted RHD by then either, we’d be ringing their phones every day asking if they’d like a certain Chris Tanev.
None of that happened, none of that will happen, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on all this
Reverting two signings that should have never happened. While Beagle and Roussel provide some nice depth, grit, and leadership, they’re taking away spots from the likes of Leipsic/Goldobin/Gaudette/etc. If the Canucks are also serious about this rebuild and are *close* to being done in 3-4 years, these contracts are going to bite. The fact that there are NTCs on all years is even more hurtful. I understand there’s a market on these guys, and according the Vancouver media (Rick Dhailwal) 10 teams were interested in these guys which drove the price up. Saying that, a smart GM realizes when the market has driven the price too high and then walks away.
While giving Beagle and Roussel paydays, the Canucks had interest in Riley Nash yet decided to walk away. Nash signed a steal of a contract in Columbus (3 x 2.75). Vancouver could have easily given Beagle money to Riley Nash and it would’ve made much more sense. A 3 year, $3.25M contract would’ve been completely reasonable for a guy coming off a 41 point season in Boston and provides temporary center and PK depth. To please Jim Benning, I’m presuming he provides “grit” as well.

Choix de 3e ronde en 2020 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
Colorado could use the extra center depth. At $2.5M, a healthy Sutter could be useful for Colorado. Emphasis on healthy. The 3rd rounder could be conditional, whereas if Sutter fails to play more than 60 or more games, the Pick turns into a 4th rounder. On the flip side of the coin, if Sutter puts up more than 35 points in his first season, the pick converts to a 2nd round pick. I used 2020 as the year since Colorado doesn’t have a 2019 4th.
It’s time for Brandon “franchise” Sutter to be shown the exit door. Retaining on him in order to receive value is a smart move considering the Canucks have cap space, and who would want to have Sutter at over $4M? This is part of what “weaponizing our cap space” means, FYI Jimbo.
