Description
Well, 3.5 I think was much more than MOST of us expected... Heres how I believe things get laid out.

Since we didnt qualify Sheahan (mainly for the minimum being to high) I'd guess the penguins try and sign him low... This could go either way however if we cant, im sure a low cost Center can be signed or ZAR possibly moves to center?

This move however, leaves the penguins with 5 Right wings. (GMJR said Sprong will play this year) (Kessel, Hornqvist, ZAR, Rust, Sprong.) This leads me to believe either ZAR plays 4th line center is Sheahan isnt signed or... they TRY to move rust over to the left side.

This kind of put us in a weird cap scenario, however I believe a trade is GOING to happen to free cap now.

Please discuss below.

I guess the Pens didn't learn from their Sheary mistake. I think Rust is more of a versatile player than Sheary, but I would have never thought a $3.5/year. $3/year max. But you're right, trades have to be made now. They have to do something to strengthen the defense and contracts like Sheary's and Hunwick's don't allow that to happen. Would like to see Hags stay but he could also be on the move. If Sheahan doesn't re-sign, then the Pens could do ZAR, Simon, or Blueger to fill that 4th line center. Or they can try and get a guy like Beagle. Great at face-offs and solid defensively. If the Caps let him go.

ZAR is a LW, not a RW. But, I really can't envision them wanting to pay Rust 3.5M to play on the 4th line. He will never live up to his contract getting only 4th line minutes and PK duty. Rust has Hornqvist, Kessel, and Sprong ahead of him on the RW. If they move him back to LW, which he can play but he loses maybe 25% effectiveness, then you have Guentzel, Hagelin, Sheary, Rust, and ZAR.

I think Sheary is a goner at this point, along with Hunwick if they can move him. Moving both for cap space would allow Penguins to keep Sheahan and Oleksiak, and still possibly have room for Duclair and/or Jack Johnson.

Only reason i said ZAR as RW is because they threw him on RW a few times which confused me however hes a natural center so it will be interesting to see what they do

ZAR is left handed he can play the LW.
Rust has also played LW. It's not such a huge disadvantage playing your opposite side as a winger. Defense is different due to stick position. On defense when you are right handed playing on the Left side your stick is basically backwards. Since defense men are suppose to stay in their zone, that makes them clearing with back hands and having to move to clear naturally. Winger doesn't really work that way and they can be almost anywhere on the ice.

I think it's in Sheahan best interest to resign. Most of his points came with Kessel on his wing and he's only 1 year out of putting up no points in detroit. No one has forgot that. He should sign a 1 year deal. Let his play do the talking, and then hit FA. He'd make more and he wouldn't kill his value. He leaves, his value could tank before he hits FA and all he gets is a 2 year deal.

Only problem was when I saw Rust play the left side his play was significantly worse, sure it could be worked on but seems like a steep price to pay for a guy you want to switch wings...

The cap hit might feel ugly at first, but Rust is basically a slightly slower Hagelin with more offense. He's got a better chance of scraping up against 50 points than Hagelin ever did, and unlike Sheary he has tons of value outside his production. He can play on literally every line, and that term is pretty great for stability into the tail-end of the Sid/Geno era. Matt Cane pegged this one pretty well, too (only off by ~100k).

I'm sure there is some truth to that, you are shooting back hands more. But if you can get set into a zone offense, you can shoot basically naturally. Not to mention when it's a break away you can choose the right side if you are streaking to the net.

Buyout Hunwick. Sheary has one of the best possession stats in the league and does the dirty work in the corners. But I think he will be traded. Rust has 40pts and is worth 3.5 million.

GMJR has already stated that he is not buying any players out. So the only hope there is a trade. And if rumors are true that the Pens REALLY want Skinner, I would count on Sheary, Jarry, and hopefully Hunwick to Carolina for Skinner.
