A more Realistic team for the start of the year

Description
So I flipped Russell for two lower and D. He is capable of playing both sides so it gives Pit some really good flexibility for injures.

I then flip hunwick to Chicago to provide them with another D man to improve their bottom 6.

Oilers push for Green, hopefully 3 years versus two gets him down by 500k.

Hemmer comes home to close out his career and maybe a cup.

With Ferland gone, Calagry adds Kassian and a backup in Montoya.

With the signing of Green, I wonder where the Oilers are going to have any cap flexibility to sign their RFAs the following year. Even without Green, the Oilers seem to big cap issues.

Edmonton really needs to shed Lucic and RNH. Those two $6 million contracts just kill anything you try to put beside McDavid. RNH is good but you could trade him for a couple cheaper wingers that would have the same production with McDavid. Trade him now while his value is high and get some wingers you can afford. Lucic should just stop being paid, get him off your cap anyway you can.

Where? To Montreal? Haha. Ya no, it's not those 2 contracts that are killing you. It's Russell, Sekera, klefbom, Larson all being paid 4+ million for long term. With nurse on the rise!... Move one of them for a top 6-9 forward. Russell handicaps you bc he wants to be in Alberta. Close to his ranch in red deer. Lucic is a whole entirely situation altogether.

Russel and Sekera you may have a point but I don’t think Klefbom and Larsson are the problem, their EDM best dmen. Plus all those 4 make almost 16 million, Lucic and RNH make $12 by themselves for the next 5 years. Russel and Sekera are bad contracts but hard to move. My opinion would be to move that $12 million out and use the value of those players to bring in young cheap controllable wingers for McDavid and Draistle.

Either way I think we have the same opinion, Edmonton has to many long term bad contracts in Russel, Sekera and Lucic.

When you're weak up front like oilers are. You don't trade from your weakness.. Trade from what you got an abundance of. Which is defenceman. They maybe our best. But Klefbom isn't on the do not trade list. He becomes expendable. But he would bring you in the best return for a top 6 forward. I think he'd be the one to go. Unfortunate as it is... I bought his jersey.. And there is another one I bought that got traded

RNH and McDavid are magic together.. and both defensively responsible. Also a safety net of Draisaitl or McDavid get injured. RNH is just as valuable as Draisaitl. Absolutely zero reason to trade Nugey

Even if a team were to offer you two top 6 forwards with contracts between $2 million and $3 million? Edmonton needs an actual top 6, not just one generational player, a top center and then a second line center who plays well on Mcdavids wing. Hope to see Puljujärvi jump into the league soon so they actually have a right winger to play top line minutes.

It’s just my opinion but I think McDavid is a guy you can put with just about anybody and see magic with, filling out the rest of the top 6 has to be cheap but effective, RNH isn’t cheap, Lucic isn’t cheap, only difference is that RNH could actually get you the return.

Ya Green it probably a push. I think Oilers cap issues are more short term than long term. Lucic isn't worth $6M but he isn't worth $2M either. He will bounce back and play a decent 2nd LW.

Russell has a tradeable contract the following year... He will have a limitedNTC and is lower salary will be appealing for the bargin teams.

Sekera will likely bounce back a bit as well. His injury wasn't good and he likely rushed back due to the Oilers initial play. All guys are likely 1-1.5 higher than they should but that's what you get for signing FAs. Oilers have some guys on the farm that will be filling in these roles the next year or two. Look at Bear, Jones, Yamamoto, Benson.

You don’t need to trade Nuge to get those players. He’s in no way the reason we are in a cap crunch. Russell Lucic Sekera, And even strome to an extent are way too expensive for what they provide. Wingers aren’t too difficult to acquire, so I don’t know why you feel the need to trade our 3rd best forward for two middleish wingers. All these years Edmonton was criticized for lack of centre depth and now they have it. You don’t just trade that away. Your point about cheap wingers being effective with McDavid is exactly why they have Rattie up there.
