From the rangers side they get a pick and a prospect. And from the Bruins side they get a dman who can put up 20-30 points in a season and a big body

Good return for the Rangers. Makes sense for both team, but Rangers win.

It just seems like Boston "half-assed" it. Holden doesn't really give them anything they don't already have.

***EDIT*** I feel like kempny set the market for this trade. So I get the value part of the trade. Its just that WAS had a 3 wheeled shopping cart in Orpik. So that trade seems more justified.

Don't hate it don't love it. Don't know enough about Holden but looking at the numbers....

Willing to hit - No one on Boston has more hits
Willing to block shots - only Chara has blocked more shots on Boston
60% dZone Starts - shouldn't be a huge liability on the back end
90.9 oiSV%
can play 20 minutes a night if need be

Depth guy that can step in for games that require a little more size and strength. Again don't love it and don't hate it.

O'Gara was a guy I liked being he played just down the street at Yale, but he really didn't have a future with the team. He could be a good 3rd pairing d-man that wont really chip in much offensively, but wont kill you defensively. The real value for the Rangers is in the 3rd rounder.

Not sure there is really a winner or loser in this deal to be honest

How do you figure? We traded a guy who had no future with the team and an unknown for a depth 3rd pairing guy lol

Rangers fans act like they just go McAvoy for Holden

I mean, Boston does get another 3rd pairing d-man ... i liked the idea of Kempny or Oduya but Kempny already got traded ... Oduya was still available though ... either way, Holden could be a good fit there too. I think it could make sense for Boston ... either way, whether it's good for the Bruins or not, i'd have to say as a Rangers fan i'm pretty happy with the return the Rangers got.

Every hockey player is as good as McAvoy compared to Holden

Rangers got a good return but I can see why boston did it. Lost 4 dman last playoffs and had to play scrubs like Tommy Cross. This is insurance at its finest

He's really not that bad. He had a really good year last year and is struggling a bit more this year ... he's actually playing better than he had been in Colorado, it's just that he's not playing as good as last year. I think he's a good bottom pairing d-man. Good add by Boston, the only thing i'm wondering about is if that was maybe too much to give up. Sure, the Rangers got a good return, but win-win trades exist and it could make sense for Boston too. Questionable move for Boston but by 'questionable' i mean it could turn out pretty good too, not just 'it is probably not a very good move'.

I don't think it could. It was a good trade for both sides.

For the Rangers - Holden was a UFA and it didn't sound like he'd be back. Kempny netted Chicago a 3rd and that was kind of the benchmark when you think about it. O'Gara coming back gives the Rangers a mid-20's d-man that can play both sides. With all the injuries he could give you some NHL time this season and you can see what you have.

For Boston - O'Gara had no future with the team. He was very low in the depth charts for the team and was due for a new deal this summer. In Holden Boston gets a guy who can fill in for injury or give guys a rest aka he's an insurance policy. With the abundance of prospects in the system the pick isn't as crucial to Boston.

All in all it was just a good hockey trade for two franchises with different paths right now.

Rangers win. Younger player and a pick to help them. Holden could be useful for Boston's next run.

O’Gara belongs in the AHL so nothing lost but 3rd rounder for an ok short term rental that definitely helps Boston for now . Good trade for both.

Oh my gosh... this trade actually makes me miss Chiarelli a little. Well, not really, but I don't like it at all from Boston's standpoint. O'Gara still has some potential; it's a shame he's stuck behind McQuaid on the depth chart. If we're that worried about injuries, we still have Paul Postma, and O'Gara could've stepped in during the playoffs if need be. We don't need Holden, and even if we did, he's not smart enough to be a viable choice. (Though Grzelcyk-Holden sounds like an okay pairing, at least.)

Rangers fan I see. I think we all know that Holden isn't very smart, but he's fine on a bottom pairing. (Just should be nowhere near McDonagh.)

Does anyone realize the problem of where would we put him? I mean, not even a healthy McQuaid could crack the lineup for the longest time. I mean we got Chara-Carlo McAvoy-Krug Gryzeleck-McQuaid with Postma as a 7th. When Miller gets healthy I don’t know what we’re gonna do. I say we probably flip him. Maybe to EDM for Marroon

He's an insurance policy for the 3rd pairing if need be. Being a left shot, I imagine BOS will want him to play LHD when he does play. O'Gara as very little potential in upside. He's 24 years old, couldn't crack the Bruins line-up and has been pass on the depth chart by many Bruins LHD prospects. Postma can be waived or traded, so could McQuaid or Miller. It's a depth move that cost Boston a young AHL d-man that had no future with the team and a late 3rd rounder.

I don't see a problem at all. When you need someone who plays a heavier game, you slot in Holden. if someone struggles and needs a wake up call, you play Holden. If someone needs a rest on the 3rd pairing, you play Holden. He's the 7th or 8th on this team.

Holy Crap New York killed in this deal. They got a rookie in Rob O'Gara and a 3rd rounder all for Nick Holden?!! I would have guessed a 5th for him, maybe 4th at the highest.

If you talked to most NYR fans they'd given him away for nothing....that's why I take "fans" opinion on value with a grain of salt.
