As pointed out by others, the Sens save money in real dollars. Cap hits from the trade are essentially a wash but Gaborik's deal is much cheaper in real dollars after this year. So Eugene Melnyk saves some cash.

My quick math was a little off. It's more significant. Including what players were owed remainder of this season, #Sens will save $5,455,107 in real cash with the transaction - even by eating 25% of Phaneuf contract. Suffice to say, I think this was the key to the deal.

Kings and Senators have been talking on and off for a bit on a Phaneuf deal but source says Ottawa agreeing to take Gaborik in the deal was obviously ``huge.'' Deal doesn't happen otherwise

Also, if Seattle is indeed awarded a team, & if the rules do remain the same, & Dion has not retired or been seriously injured, & if the draft were to take place in the summer of 2020 (or earlier), then the #LAKings would have to protect Dion Phaneuf in the Expansion Draft.
