If Tavares is available as a rental to any current contender, they have no choice but to bid at least that. And it absolutely makes them Cup favorites. And if the trade includes two late firsts and a couple of good prospects, it might make long term sense for Brooklyn, who have a ton of talented young forwards waiting in the wings, and aren't in the playoffs with Tavares playing maximum ice time on a minimum contract. Then they get the rest of the season to see what Bailey is really worth on his own, or they trade him somewhere else for a top prospect and another late 1st.

Who ever recorded his answer should have said in response, “Enjoy Unemployment.”

First of all, the Islanders already said that they WON'T trade him, so there should be no choice to bid anyway, not to forget that Tavares' statement the other day hints that he wants to stay with the Islanders. Also, you said "a couple of good prospects" when the only ONE prospect they give up is the one with their brightest future skater, and makes it really a dumb idea to give up 2 firsts and your best prospect for a guy that you get for 15-20 games and then can't even re-sign.

I'd love this idea if it was at all possible, but I just don't see it happening. I think the Pens best chance of getting Tavares is having him do a Selanne/Kariya to Colorado move, where he signs a cheap one year deal to come try to win a Cup, then signs the big money deal the year after (and even then it's super unlikely)

Just because a gm says they aren't currently looking to trade him doesn't mean it wont happen. If he hears the right offer or changes his mind it can happen. Why would he not move him and risk losing him in ufa when they can get a lot for him

What they said

Go up a few comments and you will see me write back at Eli. What people don't understand is that they did not say that they are not looking to trade him, they made a statement "They WON'T trade him." There is a huge difference

But is the difference in whether or not they'll actually consider the right offer, or in how much of an amazing offer it would have to be. A point a game AHL prospect seems to come along every year in WBS, but how many more good years to Crosby and Malkin have? How impressive would it be to win three Cups in a row.

I agree with you from a general hockey sense viewpoint, but look at the deals Lemieux has made at the deadline, before, for Guerin and Hossa. He's not that worried about AHLers or draft picks. He builds through the magnetic pull of a generational talent, and it seems to work a lot better for him than the conventional method.

I know. It's not a very realistic or likely trade. It is a fun idea only.

Well when Malkin and Sid finish their good years, they will pass the torch. Name 1 team in the entirety of sports (since the 66-67 expansion) that has won championships every year
