Deadline Dealin w/ Vancouver and Calgary!

Description
It's that time of the year... Calgary trade is a realistic sell. The Vancouver deal is a blockbuster buy. Van gets prospects in Morin, Stolarz and those 1st and 3rd rounders. Weal is a useful 30-40 points on cheap salary for another year. MacDonald is a minutes eater to help replace Tanev, but a much worse player. Lehtera is the cap dump to make it work. Bear in mind, Van can only retain 1 more salary (cap of 3) so they will have to take $$$ back in a Sedins deal with anyone. What say you? Does Vancouver get enough value here to sell and accelerate their rebuild? Are the Flyers giving up too much future value for rentals plus a D with declining stats y/y? Hot takes welcome.

Currently the twins are undecided about waiving their NMC’s but I think they will most likely stay in Vancouver. Also we do not need a goalie prospect as we already have Demko and DiPietro.

The trade is in PHI’s favour as the twins and Tanev could fetch more than cap dumps, a few prospects and what will probably be late picks.

Thanks for your take, nuxfan. I had no idea the Twins were leaning on staying in Van. I saw some other Canucks fan post a deadline deal getting them a goalie prospect so thought that was a need for Van. My mistake.

That said, I'm not sure the Twins fetch as much as you think. Those cap hits are going to be hard to move, especially given the Canucks can only retain salary on 1. Few teams can fit them so cap dumps are likely necessary for any trade partner. On the other hand, Tanev should be very pricey given his good reputation and how thin D is across the league.

I don’t think Vancouver has a problem taking in cap dumps but they’re also gonna need to get a couple more draft picks or prospects for that. Sure the Sedins cap hit is huge I agree but if u retain one of them, they can get both Sedins for like $5M each which isn’t really too bad and they’re both good help on the PP and PK still

No worries. Also, I care to disagree with your thought process pertaining to the return that Vancouver would get for the twins. Assuming that they get traded at the deadline their cap hits will be a fraction of the 7 million that they were initially. Their cap hits would be calculated by going $7,000,000 / 182 days = 38,461.53846153846 x 42 days = $1,615,384.62. Now without any retention many teams would actually be able to take on their cap hits.

I appreciate the pro rata breakdown, but on the flip side, there's a lot of potential trade partners so close to the cap that even another $3 mill (after pro rata) for the twins is going to be prohibitive without significant salary coming back the other way. Right now, there are 16 teams with roughly $2.5 mil or less cap space. While you say, "Now without any retention many teams would actually be able to take on their cap hits," it's actually less than half the league and you can narrow that down further to teams that are actually still in contention and interested in paying up to add the Twins. We'll certainly see come the deadline.

"Right now, there are 16 teams with roughly $2.5 mil or less cap space." This changes at the deadline. For instance, Pittsburgh currently has $1,967,606 in cap space but at the deadline they will have $3,443,311.

I bow to your math that I am too lazy to do. I didn't realize it would accumulate that much by that time. That said, it's still a tight squeeze, particularly if interested teams pack on an experienced defender for a cup run, as so many always seem to do. But still, it's good if Van doesn't need to take a cap dump back, particularly with extended term. I figure Van could do so to get some extra return though.
