Bergevin misses out on Tavares who wants to go to a team that has a chance to win. Little is, the unfortunate casulaty of this as the Jets would love to keep him but they just can't and since Tavares has come in he's expendable. The Jets trade little to the Canadians who need a C desperately and Little is affordable and can do the Job. He's no Tavares that's for sure but he'd instantly be their #1 C (I know that's not saying much)

Myers also has to be moved to accommodate the 12M incoming of Tavares. The picks from this deal help keep the cupboards full as in the upcoming years, they will not be able to re-sign all their young talent as they'll have to give raises to Laine, Wheeler, Connor, Roslovic as well.

I know people say Tavares will never sign with the Jets but here's the thing. Very few teams can even come remotely close to being able to afford that high of a CAP hit, while also being able to offer Tavares a true shot at winning with truly elite scoring wingers to surround him and excellent D as well as goaltending. This team is now an instant, perennial contender.

The other thing that allowed this move to be facilitated is the fact that Mason is on LTIR (retired) due to repeated concussion. It's not a requirement, but it allows the CAP space for the bonuses and to not have to worry about overages.
