The maximum salary that can be retained in a deal is 50% of the players salary, AND... is a team retains salary, they must retain a percentage of the entire contract not for one year.
Example: Montreal can't trade Weber away and say they are going to pay 1/3 of his salary next year. They must pay 1/3 of his salary for every year remaining on his deal.
Back to Bobby Ryan: he has this season and 4 more years of contract left with a 7.25M$ cap hit. IF (and that's a big IF) OTT were to retain 50% of his salary, whoever takes on Bobby Ryan will have a 3.625M$ cap hit for the remainder of this season and 4 more seasons.
Question 1: Does any team in this league feel that Bobby Ryan (at a 3.625M$ cap hit over 4+ seasons is worth acquiring?
Question 2: Does OTT want to keep 3.625M$ on it's books for 4+ seasons for Bobby Ryan to play elsewhere?
