Thanks, Bulldog! This is really helpful. With the way the roster is constructed right now the leafs don't have enough cap space to cover that this year. What are your thoughts on the implications of this then? A percentage of performance bonuses is carried over into next year? The leafs trim the roster to 22 and "hope" for an injury?? A trade happens?

Bulldog thanks for your details on the performance bonus.
To answer "Blowing the Zone", maybe the only way the Leafs can add an expensive (good) player is to add TDL and have retention. It wouldn't be much of a cap it. I'm sticking to my thought, for cap reasons, Nylander is traded during the summer.

Definitely in a tight spot. There is the realistic ideas and the AGM fantasy one done in a vacuum. I prefer the latter...

I think the players we can't retain for next year need to be considered for trades...but if it is only for rentals then are we getting ahead.

Trades?:
Anaheim? I would wonder if moving Gardiner back to Anaheim with Andreas Johnsson for Manson would be a possibility. Hurts but works for the Leafs but Anaheim is hard against the cap as well and might lose Leaf players. Saves us $600,000 towards the Performance Bonus

Carolina? Brown and top AHL forward (Moore?) for Ferland? Saves us $350,000 towards the Performance Bonus.

That $950,000 would put us back in the black.

Nylander’s cap hit is prorated at 6.9m. Current cap space is 9.6m and projected space by end of the season is 5.83m. There will be no carry over.

And no palhal... nylander will not be moved.

I see that with Nylander as well palhal. The most he should have commanded on the Leaf team with comparables in my mind was $6,250,000 and I thought that would be considered overpaid for a 20 goal scorer that can't come through in the playoffs when it matters most.

July 2nd he will only need to be paid $700,000 followed by $6,000,000 for the next 4 years.

Nylander held out for financial reasons which was his prerogative but his conditioning is horrible, his offensive instincts are predictable and his over all play is so slow that he is worse than most of our 4th liners. His chemistry is SO bad with his team mates and it is basically because he missed training camp.

He could cost us a shot at the Cup as our second highest paid player on the team if he isn't up to giving us the depth of a pro-rated 25+ goals a season by the end of the year. Tampa, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Nashville, etc have better depth if Nylander can't get it going.

I hope the media constantly call him out as well as the influence his dad reportedly had on Nylander because they both felt Nylander was so awesome. Nylander now has to be held accountable in the fish bowl of Toronto hockey.
