Description
I can't decide which of Pesce or Roy would be a better fit on the blueline.

I am cautiously optimistic that Tanev will be a Leaf by next season. If not, that might change the conversation about which defenceman is a better fit.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward Roy. We can have a McCabe-Tanev shutdown pair that eats really tough minutes and takes the pressure off Rielly-Roy. This is similar to what Dallas is doing right now with Lindell-Tanev and Harley-Heiskenen. It's worth noting that Rielly-Roy is no where near in the same stratosphere as Harley-Heiskenen. I just think that, with how much money Rielly makes and just how abysmal he is defensively, the rest of the D's deployment should be focused on ensuring Rielly gets the easiest defensive matchups. Having said that, you also need Rielly out there with the Matthews-Tavares lines in order to be effective. If he's out there with our bottom-6, then there's pretty much no point. Roy is pretty much what Brodie was when we signed him, so this could still work.

Alternatively, I'm not as familiar with Pesce's actual game, so I'm not sure if he'd be a better fit or not. Obviously, this team needs a consistent and reliable top-4 defenceman who can play in all situations. So, Pesce is going to be a fit by default.

Anyways, this is what (I hope) the roster will look like by October.

I think if you are prioritizing looking for a long-term partner for McCabe, you go for Pesce if it's for Rielly, then Roy. It's possible that Rielly-Pesce could be great, but I think Roy would fit better. I also don't think McCabe - Roy would be as good as McCabe - Pesce. Tanev would likely be a great partner for either guy, but he would be a very short-term solution. The difference in cost is something to consider of course. I could see Pesce costing up to 1M more than Roy, but maybe it would be 500K at most.

Assuming they can fit both Tanev and one of Pesce or Roy, I think I would lean toward adding Pesce, since it sounds like McCabe is likely to get an extension. Part of me wants to say Roy, so that they can get Rielly a partner and not worry about it again, but if Roy doesn't do well with him, then that would be problematic. At the same time, the Leafs can't cater to Rielly forever.

That's true, but he might be more of a second-pairing guy for most of them (lots of people would claim he was years ago but I disagree). Toronto is unlikely to get a new first pairing guy, but I think it might just be time where you just get the best available quick solution for him. If they get 2-years out of Tanev, then will just be 4-more years, by then they could have maybe target the next Matt Roy in FA or maybe the next guy comes as a rental next year. They might also develop someone who could pair with him. Who knows? Maybe Niemela would be a solid partner for him.

I just don't think it's that important anymore to focus on getting Rielly the perfect D-partner to get the best out of him over fixing the rest of the D-core.
