The scary thing is, that doesn't even hurt the Sabres future and they get the best player in the world... and Canes take that

Value isn't a problem, but EDM would almost certainly demand a return with a different structure.

So, you’re saying 2 years of Connor McDavid is worth a near Vezina caliber goaltender, a first and a second line Center, both signed long-term, a top 12 first round pick, and a young forward who was drafted only a year ago and is already contributing in the NHL. Oh, and a young defenseman former first round pick who looks to be top four potential. He may be the best player in the world, but since he can’t win by himself it doesn’t make your team better giving up huge amounts of assets to get that player. Not unless the trade also happens to come with some magical spell that convinces him to sign long term for way less money than he’s currently making, so you have a prayer of a chance of building a team around him.

Why does he have to resign for way less? The cap will keep going up and Ceci/Greenway money will be gone - can bury Campbell if needed, trade Sammy, buyout skinner. There's lots of money
