Description
Just having some fun and trying to find a means to improve the Team for next year.

The biggest hurdle comes with Graves' contract as while it is an albatross of a deal, I do think some teams may find some use for him and deploy him in a more appropriate role. I do realize that Arizona isn't the most ideal destination for somebody with protection, but the Yotes have no defencemen signed for next season and I do recall seeing some of their LTIR players being off of the books next season. A cap hit of $4.5 mil would help with that and who knows, maybe Graves will find his game in a low-pressure environment.

I also feel that Dubas' other acquisition this past summer in Smith has not been a good team fit, but he is still a good producer and should net you 40 or so points a season. Toronto will most likely be priced out of both Domi and Bertuzzi and being able to bring in Smith at a low cost (and a D-man they probably do not elect in re-signing who is also one of Dubas' guys) could end up working for all parties.

Pickering seems to be an odd duck within the system and I feel that it wouldn't be a major loss to the Pens' future if they were to trade him for additional picks down the line. Chicago could get a future top 4 or 6 D-man who may be ready to crack the NHL line-up in 1-2 years and the Pens gain a later first round in next year's draft.

I left some room on the roster and didn't go to the cap as I am hopeful that we finally get to see Poulin and or some of the Canes' prospects the Pens picked up in the Guenztel deal, especially at 3rd C. If none of them are NHL-ready JR could always be swapped in to take over 3rd C duties while putting the younger players on the wing.

The same is applicable in net as it seems Blomqvist should be ready to take over as the backup or partially take in some NHL games. Re-signing Ned is more of a security blanket should Blomqvist not be ready for full NHL starts or need more development time in the A.

Some of the money allocated to FAs may be off but again, there is enough CAP to make those adjustments if needed.

Hawks are pretty loaded on LD prospect I doubt they have much interest in this.

AZ passes - they are not near the floor, 4 of the D are RFAs and will all get resigned, and too risky to take 5 x 4.5m on the hope a guy heading into 30s 'finds his game', and nieto (even for a year) isnt needed.

I appreciate the outside of the box thinking instead of the usual cap dump to Chicago or crappy vet to help Bedard line of thinking. Unfortunately LD is the deepest position in the org so much that they've got LD in Rockford playing the right side right now. Plus Chicago absolutely loves Hayes and the versatility he will bring to the lineup. I think Chicago may be drooling at the prospect of what a Hayes/Bedard/Nazar line might look like.

Hawks decline. The fit simply isn't there. First, as DangleCat noted, the one area the Hawks are loaded with prospects is at LD. They have Vlasic and Korchinski playing their first years on the left side, now - and they are firmly ensconced there.

Second, a rebuilding team like the Hawks does not give away 1st round draft picks, getting lower round picks in return. They don't need more, lower round picks; they want HIGH draft pricks.

Last, their forward group is where the need is highest (maybe apart from RD), so they are highly unlikely to want to give Hayes up - who himself was a high 3rd round pick in 2022.

This trade doesn't enhance the Hawks future; in fact, IMO, it impairs it on many levels. If Pickering were a RD, maybe there'd be something to talk about, but even then coughing up Hayes and a 1st round pick are probably deal breakers, by themselves...
