It's the wrong move, Tanev with Rielly, Brodie moves down and stabilizes the bottom 4. I think Zadorov playing top 4 minutes will disappoint, whereas Tanev is a stalwart.

Getting both involves too much cap gymnastics, driving up the price.

Just getting Zadorov gets too expensive when sending back Klingberg. Might as well pay a bit more for Tanev.

You're probably right that Zadorov will disappoint but the OP is right that he's likely the main target for Treliving, and as much as Tanev is great, spending a 1st on him alone is probably a waste, especially considering that McCabe and Brodie haven't been a good fit. Brodie/McCabe and Klingberg haven't looked good either.

Sending out Timmins and Klingberg and not getting someone who can produce offense from the backend is definitely counterproductive since the whole point of adding Klingberg wasn't just for having that shot from the point on the PP that Rielly lacks but also to having a big minutes Dman that can produce offense 5v5. That's why I think Treliving is probably looking to see if he can add Zadorov and Hanifin (assuming that Timmins doesn't prove himself in the next couple of weeks), which will cost a ton, but it's probably worth paying the price more than Zadorov+Tanev or just Tanev alone.

Acquiring Hanifin probably requires the Leafs to part ways with Liljegren but maybe that's worth considering especially if Timmins can become a regular. I don't think Liljegren will take the next steps that he needs to become a bonafide top 4 D if he remains with the Leafs.
