Description
What can the sharks even do? Feel like people will blame Quinn, but the player management if this team feels awful.

Hertl is locked in (not sure why he signed that contract). Maybe you can trade him in the offseason, but about to turn 30 and locked in long term at $8.1M

Couture is 34 with 4 years left at $8M.

Barbanov, Duclair, Leblanc and Hoffman could all be TDL deals, but the team can only retain 1 contract with Burns and EK still being retained.

I'm sure the team will perform better when Barbanov and Couture return from injury, but at this rate you might as well see what some of your younger players are capable of as the team is clearly going to be in the basement for the next 3-4 years.

The cap situation this year makes things even worse for the sharks to try and acquire assets for the future.

It's just a very bad situation and it's only going to get worse. How do the players get motivated to play each game? They're not only losing. They're getting embarrassed. They made Vancouver and Pittsburgh think they're the '84 Oilers.

So that's our identity? We make teams feel good about themselves?

I understand we're early in a rebuild. I'm willing to be patient. But can we at least play like a professional hockey team?

I know fans already want Quinn gone, but I question if that even makes a difference.

I think it's a tough combination of players personally. There aren't really stand out rookies/young players for vets to rally around and help guide. It's just sort of a group of guys that have been around the league.

So I definitely agree with your identity point, just seems like they're putting guys out there to play beer league.

Hertl signed an extension in March of 2022, which means the 2021-22 season, at that point, they were set to miss the playoffs for the 3rd straight season after making the conference finals. He probably liked SJ and the organization probably viewed itself as a good team that was performing very badly. After missing the playoffs for a 4th straight year, the Sharks are obviously changing direction and admitting that they need a rebuild. So, in short, Hertl probably signed there because he liked SJ and he likely had hope that they would get better and that the worst-case scenario is that they would be forced to retool. Signing in SJ also gave him more money and it was easier to get trade protection and more restrictive terms. So, maybe he did figure that they might end up rebuilding, but his trade protection allows him to dictate where he wants to go pretty much for 6/8 years and he can never be sent down to the minors without his permission.

SJ definitely needs to be able to move either Hertl or Couture, sooner rather than later so that they could have some breathing room to weaponize their cap space.

It's a terrible idea for them to rush their prospects and put them into a losing scenario. They know that are going to be bad and they want to be bad. Might as well have their veterans and guys who just need a chance to play on their team play. So, that when they are ready to compete, guys like Eklund don't end up feeling like Eichel did in Buffalo. If they force their way onto the team by actually earning it then so be it.

I like what Yzerman is doing in Detroit. Of course they're much farther along in their rebuild. But he's filled his roster with some good vets in trades and UFA.

For the first time in a long time, they're competing.

He has a boatload of good NHL prospects playing in Grand Rapids and overseas. He's not going to give a young player a roster spot just for the sake of it.

Players are going to have to earn a spot. Even young Berggren played all last season in Detroit. His play wasn't up to snuff in training camp and back to Grand Rapids he went.

There's a fine line. You want your best young players playing and developing. But do you really want them being surrounded with so much losing?

Are they better off playing in the AHL?

Couture and Hertl are probably the only vets with any real trade value. But if the Sharks trade them the team will be even worse. Plus their contracts mske them hard to trade. Maybe use the last retention spot on Couture if he wants to leave.

The idea that Barabanov, Zadina, Duclair, Hoffman, and Labanc will have great years and good trade value at the TDL seems far fetched at this point. Same with Granlund and Rutta.

As a rebuilding team the Sharks can't give up any picks or prospects to get better this year.

I doubt firing Quinn would make a diffetence. The Sharks just simply don't have enough talent. No stars.

Gushchin seems to be on fire in the AHL. Maybe bring him up to score some goals. Keep Eklund in the NHL. Ok to let the other prospects develop longer in the AHL. It's scary that the Barracuda aren't doing so great so far this year either.

No clear solution for the Sharks this year. Just tank and pray for Celebrini.

I may have to watch the Barracuda instead of the Sharks this year. Or become a NJD fan, cuz if they make the ECF the Sharks get another 1st.

Us Sharks fans had it so good for so long. Now it's like we're back in the Cow Palace again. Maybe we need a new Link Gaetz. If we can't win a game we could at least win a few fights. Could Smith, Burroughs, or Okhotiuk become the next "missing link".?
