You can’t have both can you? That’s my point…not who is better? Which one…and keep cap in consideration?
Selke nomination is a joke, no way he deserved that, and playmakers are easy to find. Put him on with Gregor and Reaves and what will he do? Nylander would still produce with those two.
If Nylander stays then what are you gonna pay Marner a fraction less than Matthews again, he will suck out again if not…like he did last time.
And come on presence? Dude has zero charisma…he turns pink in the playoffs with a bad case of the yips.
Finally no one blows a tire and gaffs as much as he does per cap dollar.
They have to pay Marner less than Matthews, even if Marner still has more career points (which he does not - his side's argument was that he was their top scorer). The fact that Marner is already making almost 11M, means that he shouldn't get much of a raise, 12Mx8 would be a huge contract if he even gets that much of a raise. So, they can certainly keep them, the issue would be building a team around them. Realistically, speaking they are in big trouble if they can't get Nylander for like 9.75M and Marner at 11.25 even if Tavares re-signs at something like 4M instead of 5-7M. It won't be long before they need to re-sign Matthews/he walks while they try to slide under the cap.
As for Marner with the selke nomination, he's always been a pretty good defensive winger, that being said Nylander definitely has the tools and skills to be better offensively than him. He's a much better shooter than Marner who has improved his shooting and gotten back-to-back 30+ goal seasons, and while Nylander is not as gifted as Marner as a playmaker, he can still dish the puck. I know Nylander is older than Marner and Matthews, but had it not been for that 2018-19 season, I think he would have had the season that he's having now, a year ago. Also, need to take into account the fact that he has/had a smaller role than Marner, and even Tavares. Like Keefe said, his confidence is at it's highest that it has ever been which is a huge factor in players' performances. I sometimes want to see him thrive elsewhere, like Vancouver or something just because of the lack of recognition that he gets from Leaf fans which has grown over the last couple of years but only because of his raw stats.
