I'll obviously get some hate for this post, but the whole point of this website is to be able to play around with rosters and have some imagination. (please read below before telling me I'm over the cap)
Ron Hextall straight up butchered the Penguins, gutted them.
- I didn't like the McCann trade to Toronto the day it happened, he obviously exceed expectations in Seattle last season, but I liked him in Pittsburgh and felt that he deserved to stay given his play while he was here. (protected Kapanen and Blueger over him.... and Carter which was required but see my 4th bullet point for more on that)
- Matheson for Petry, Hextall wanted "more physicality".... lol
- Marion... just no reason to do that.
- Carter.. look the trade was fine at the time, but resigning him was hilariously bad. Had Hextall not been in charge I don't think that trade ever even happens.
- EROD had 43 points his last year in Pittsburgh and 5pts in 7 playoff games, signed a cheap 1 year deal in COL, again no idea what Hextall was thinking in not resigning.
- yes, the Rakell trade was good, and yes I left it in here because if that option as on the table for freakin Hextall, I imagine any other GM running the penguins would've made the same trade.
- I added ROR as the 3C because if you reversed all of that idiot's decisions it would've left the team with enough money to sign him at his current contract. (yes I see that the team shows as $1.32M over the cap, but there is $1.56M in retained salary for Petry that I can't move but in this scenario Petry was never a penguin so that wouldn't be a factor, hence why I'm technically under the cap in this scenario. Would they have probably signed someone else last summer, possibly.
I know the pens have had it good for basically the last 3 decades. 5 cups, 2 of the greatest players to ever play the game, I'm spoiled as a fan. However, it's still frustrating to watch how a GM simply ruined the team and even more frustrating given how well Crosby, Malkin and Letang have continued to play as they've gotten older.
Can't tell me this team wouldn't have been absolutely insane to watch.
There is no chance Ron Hextall ever works in the FO for an NHL organization ever again.
Hextall made some genuinely boneheaded moves while at the helm of the ship. Probably too much rose colored glasses for yesteryear and players that were and not players that are.
GET OVER IT plz move on from whinying about Marino. I love how you only had 2 Rextall moves the rest were Dubas like Graves,Karlsson, Eller adn Neito so how can they be Rextall.

At least 4 of the moves he made are directly tied to Hextall

Glad you read my description, it's also Hextall, not Rextall.
The whole point was to show the players the penguins had moved in the past few years (Dubas didn't move any of those players) and had those players been on the team, Dubas wouldn't have needed to go sign Graves/Eller/Nieto or trade for EK, that's the whole point of the post....
Glad to see your critical thinking skills are sharp.
