Description
Ok, so before anyone goes nuts here I'm just saying that Leafs need a huge cap space for this year and next to keep Nylander and Samsonov if he gets another good year..

If they can convince Tavares to move (which he probably won't) Toronto get a Center at half the price he costs while not the center that would change the org's face he does give the option of faceoffs contention during important moments at 56 and 52% the last two years.

Plus they receive a good winger prospect and able to play at a very low cost in Ylonen, a defense Prospect in Barron and get a development project in Mysak, plus they also get some picks back.

The only reason I include a 1st for Toronto is the salary Habs need to take on for two years. By keeping their core together, and even might be able to flip Dvorak at TDL they potentially build a team that could be contenders for the next three to four years. and really, the Leafs 1st pick ain't gonna be a top 15, so by those standards they are trading away a low pick for a third, and seventh this year, and a 2nd next year.

While Tavares is the current team captain, the guy that signed to Toronto when no one did, I think he's at the end of the roll with them and is the main issue for cap space at this point. Where as Habs will gain space again next year and thus not have an issue with 2 years at 11M$ on their roster.

The only problem is.. If the Leafs are contending this year.. Tavares will never lift his NMC.. He wants to lift that cup himself after leaving NYI.

So this is just a "what if" scenario in order to give Toronto the cap space they need, other than that I don't see others leaving, and having seen what Treliving as done in Calagary and doing now in Toronto.. I expect weird trades and moves that will be a headacke for anyone that'll be replacing him if they don't win 2 cups in the next 4 years..

I know .... crazy to think Toronto would pay to move out Tavares.. But he's at the end of the roll, and he doesn't cost 1M$ on the cap.. He's paid 7.95M$ but his cap at 11M$ hurts.. So would Treliving do this?

I mean this doesn’t help Habs tho. Like he will probably be a UFA by the time they are even starting to be ready to compete so you just give away a bunch of picks/prospects for nothing

Barron, Mysak and Ylonen for a 1st pick, plus provide a leadership role from Tavares for the next two to help Suzuki develop and remove some of the pressure. I don't hink this is a "give away" for nothing. Habs want picks to continue the build. That pick is in two years, but is a playable asset for Hugues during draft or trade potential.

Both team win here, Toronto can provide cash for their Nylander and Samsonov plus others they want to keep around, and for them it's a now situation. So they need Matthews to lift a cup or two within the next four. They have to be the next Tampa Bay while their core are still young and able to put up the numbers.

Habs get a first round pick to play with.
