Would it not make sense to start Keller at 2C instead of 2LW, and then move Dvorak to the wing?
Also, why Clendening over Schenn?
Keller diiiiiid play C at BU, but he's also tiny by hockey standards, and many coaches see smaller players as wingers instead of centers because of whatever size bias exists at that position.
As for Clendening vs. Schenn, here are their respective pages for this past season on HockeyViz:
Clendening Schenn And here are their
HERO charts, side by side.
The "Replacements" charts on HockeyViz indicate that Schenn wasn't much better than the rest of the Coyotes defense, but Clendening was miles better than the rest of the Rangers' defense. The "5v5 Shots Taken/Allowed (with/without)" charts indicate that Schenn wasn't much better at generating shots and slightly worse at allowing shots than the rest of the Coyotes. However, Clendening's charts indicate that he helped the Rangers generate more high-danger shots in the home-plate area and did a pretty good job of suppressing shots in his own zone compared to the rest of the Rangers' defense.
In short, Clendening's better than Schenn at generating shots for and suppressing shots against, but he never gets any leash from his coaches because he's deemed to be too risky due to his style of play. Pair him with a competent defender like Goligoski and allow him to play his game, and he should look miles better than others think he is. (Frankly, though, you could also pair him with Chychrun, and I wouldn't complain a lot. Chychrun's good, too.)
