Description
Garlund has an extra year on his contract than Granlund, added the 2nd round pick to offset. Not sure if that's enough for Vejmelka or not.

Overall I like the depth of the team and added some grit in Bunting, Wood, Graves and Schenn. Focused on younger UFA's.

Canucks pass. The 2nd isn’t enough to offset the lack of cap savings and significant downgrade

I really like what you've done here. I think Wood, Graves and Schenn are excellent additions. I particularly like the idea of Garland for Granlund plus a future second because if there's one place where Granlund is likely to revive his career, it's Vancouver. Having traded Bo Horvat, the Canucks need a #2C and playing between two of the Russians while Pettersson centers Miller and the third could be Granlund's ticket back. Meanwhile, Garland seems excess to Vancouver's needs with all of their forwards and the second is especially valuable to a team that doesn't have one in 2023 or 2024. Of course, @mv21227 knows his team best, but I think that this is a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for the Canucks, and if it doesn't work out, Granlund's buyout in 2024 is only $1,666,667 for each of the next two seasons. As far as cap savings goes, Vancouver can always shorten their tab by $5 million by finding a taker for Tyler Myers after his bonus is paid in the summer, so the fact that this trade is cap-neutral shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

The only thing about Granlund is he wasn’t very good in Nashville this season, and was awful after moving to Pittsburgh. He’s be a very expensive 3C, especially for the quality of player he is at this point in his career. I’d want a 2nd for taking on his contract, and another 2nd to pay for Garland

How was he bad in Nash and awful in Pit?

This season (in all situations combined) his goals above expected was -9 (unlucky) and his corsi was 52%. In Nash he was 75% offensive zone starting. In Pit he was 70% defensive zone starting. He was used as a shutdown player (which he isn't good at).

He is overpaid by around 2MM, but to call him awful or bad is disingenuous.

If I paid McDavid 30MM a year, he wouldn't become bad. His contract is separate from his performance.

Granlund is worth a 5th or 6th without retention. With 2MM retention, he is probably worth a 3rd. No way is a 2nd needed to pair with him to move. He isn't a bad player or insanely overpaid.

His analytics (especially defensively) are very poor. The Canucks need more defensively responsible players
