Description
Complete building year. Dreidger gives a safeguard if Hofer isn’t ready.

Don’t think this team will be all that good.

At least have some pieces to sell if needed and set up well for strong UFA class in 24.

I doubt Krug will fetch such a package. With his contract, he's not going to be the most coveted asset on the market.

I think McDonagh trade set a decent precedent for a multi-year veteran D trades.

McDonagh was a cap casualty, and since he's a veteran with a multi-year deal at a big cap that also has a NTC, he wasn't going to fetching much.

Krug wouldn't be a cap casualty, he's also 2 years younger even though he's signed through the same ages I think. He does also have a NTC, but he may not limit his new destination to one team (although I think he would want to go to VGK maybe). That being said teams are calling to inquire about acquiring him, they won't be getting him for free basically. McDonagh himself would fetch a larger return now than he did in the offseason, if anyone wants him.

Fwiw, McDonagh was traded as a 33 year old with 4 years left. Krug in this circumstance would be getting traded as a 32-year old with also 4 years left. The difference between them is very small, and I'd argue McDonagh is the better player of the two.

That being said, you do have a point that McDonagh was traded mostly for cap reasons, hence the return being pretty much nonexistent. This doesn't apply to Krug.

Still, I just don't see him having this high trade value. The amount of teams able to eat that whole contract is small, and the general interest towards small offensive D-men is even smaller. Typically the D-men that have gotten solid returns are around 30-ish with 1 or 2 years left in the contract with retention included, known as more defensive, big body type guys.

He's saying that the Krug trade is happening at TDL of this season I think, not the 2023-24 season. Krug doesn't turn 32 until April, so I guess it's not too much of a difference.

The OP did basically suggest the McDonagh trade though, Mishmash is a prospect taken in the 2nd round a P.Myers wasn't wanted by NSH. Wennberg and Driedger wouldn't have too much value and they have to be moved to make the deal work. Wennberg could probably fetch a 2nd or a 2nd+ (Niederriter trade). Driedger would probably cost SEA an asset or be dealt for FCs due to his injuries in the offseason, so it's not much of a value increase.

Myers was a AHL player prior to trade and still is a fringe NHL D-man, if that. Mismash is 2nd rounder from 2017, so five years prior to the trade, he won't have a NHL career, he barely manages in ECHL at 24. The return was basically worth nothing. Hell, insiders thought the premise for acquiring Myers for TB was to buy him out due to his backloaded contract. Wennberg alone is worth more than this package, and there's still a second rounder included. Driedger is coming from a tough injury as was just assigned to AHL for a conditioning stint, but last season he was a serviceable goalie.

I think the value increase is very clear.
