DISCLAIMER: I am not saying this is something the Avs would do. In fact, they most likely wouldn't and I am not advocating for it but here's what I think:
The best course of action IF the Avs want Schmaltz is to trade Girard straight across. The value is there for both teams: Schmaltz has three years left at a higher cap hit than Girard but Girard has four years left on his deal and is 3 years younger so it looks pretty fair to me. I question if Girard fits into the 'Yotes timeline and if the trade even makes sense for them since they're trying to trade Chuchrun who is the same age as Girard and at a cheaper cap hit (but he IS signed for two fewer years). Schmaltz does fit the Avs' core's timeline and age of that group.
I don't think the Avs value someone like Schmaltz more than they do Girard and, given the injuries this season, it would be unwise to trade him in-season but it is a trade I might, were I MacFarland, explore in the offseason, especially if it becomes clear that they really do need someone like Schmaltz.
