I'm just not sold on Chychrun. I don't believe he's an elite defensemen, he's very very good but the motivation for paying so much to acquire him would be to contend while he can punch above his cap hit, and this defensive core you've presented is not set up to do that. Trading for him is not going to be part of the solution.
I'm supportive of trading for Meier (if the price is right) because he's a bonafide elite talent that they can extend through his prime, so even if it takes a year or two to keep building he's locked in. Look at how New Jersey got Hamilton a touch before they were ready to compete.
I like adding Brannstrom. The Blues need to look for more guys like Brannstrom to turn over the defense. Not necessarily the kind of defenseman he is, but guys who are undervalued or are on the way out in their organizations that need a fresh start. To bring up New Jersey again, they're benefiting mightily from getting guys like Marino, Sieganthaler and Graves at reasonable prices as they are for getting Hamilton in free agency. That's the approach the Blues need to emulate because they don't have a lot of cap space to work with. Those guys might bust (Brannstrom can't score to save his life), but they also might boom (all of Brannstrom's underlying numbers are very good). Strategic risks.
