Description
With Brandt Clarke being LA’s top RD prospect, is Jordan Spence available?

Petersen is in the minors so his negative value is worst than Armia’s, who can at least provide bottom 6 depth as he plays PK and shows up in 50% of playoffs games. Both contracts end in 2025 but Petersen’s $5M hit is also greater than Armia’s $3.4M). MTL would therefore ask for LA to give up the better draft pick (2023 1rst) for a 2nd and 4th rounder.

LA gets much bigger which is what Bergevin thinks would take for a deep playoff run. They get rid of dead weight in Petersen which also improves their chances a lot. Montreal gets a RD prospect which they are lacking, and get that 1rst round pick that they are seeking by taking on dead cap in Petersen.

This is hilariously bad for the Kings. Petersen has seemingly figured out whatever mechanical or mental issue was plaguing him in the AHL (.919 SV% over 12 games) so, at the very worst, he'll be back up next year as part of whatever tandem they roll with. Saying that the Kings would need to add a 1st to Petersen to get back Joel Armia, and then add Jordan Spence to get back a guy in Edmundson who has some of the worst defensive metrics in the league this year? This is just awful for LA.

I agree LA decline easily, but GMs don't care about defensive metrics. Chiarot had the worse defensive metrics because he was MTL 1LHD and got traded for a big package. Now Edmundson replace Chiarot and he is the one with the worse defensive metrics. But that doesnt mean he doesnt have good value, maybe in your opinion but we know GMs like guys like him

Beyond the metrics, then: Edmundson has been less productive (1-5-6 in 34 GP vs. 7-11-18 in 54 GP for Chiarot last year) on top of having missed a significant amount of time over the past 2 seasons, vs. Chiarot who had been relatively durable (I think he only missed a couple games around the deadline as a precautionary measure, no?) Add that to the fact that Chiarot was only a few months removed from a well-regarded playoff run, while we're obviously further away from the last time Eddy was useful in the playoffs. No matter how you slice it, I would think Edmundson is going to be viewed as significantly lower valued than Chiarot was at the deadline last year.

This "Bergevin connection" is a tired, over-used connection. He might advise Blake in some capacity, but he is NOT the Kings GM. Also, he works for the Kings now. Why would he do anything to help the Habs? And why would Blake let him?

And finally, as has been pointed out, this is horrendous from LA's perspective. There isn't a piece in that trade that I'd give a 1st for, let alone Spence. And while Peterson isn't necessarily positive value, the Kings --at absolute worst-case-- can wait a year and buy him out in the summer of 2024 for extremely minimal cap implications. His contract is very buyout friendly. I wouldn't pay a 3rd round pick to dump him, much less a 1st and a good prospect.
