The Canucks had Makar ranked #1 in 2017 (and Pettersson #2). I think a lot of teams recognized that Makar was the best player available (or at least top-3) but nobody had permission/authority to go against mainstream rankings. Of course in the Flyers case they had Hextall as explained by Clarke.

Honestly? If you're moving up a guy picked after Ratcliffe into that #35 slot from 2017, I'd go a step ahead of Comtois and pick Mario Ferraro - your pairs would be something like Provorov-Makar, Ferraro-DeAngelo, and Sanheim-Ristolainen.

Hell - if you want to even go further down the rabbit hole, if you do 2017 right, you probably don't trade a 1st for Risto (nobody needs a $5M RD3) and now you've got Isak Rosen in your pipeline, too.

I do feel bad about Nolan Patrick - I thought he looked legit and was a great pick at 2OA. It's a damn shame that his career might be over at this point.
