Yeah I don’t think it will take a ton to get Karlsson honestly. He is much better than OEL but I’m thinking a 1st and maybe some young guys. Borden would be a nice little addition. I looked at maybe taking a some cap back too like Oleksiak but most of their guys with term have a m-ntc or ntc and I’d imagine San Jose is on that list
Seattle won't care too much to for SJ to take cap probably, the goal would be to just pay less, and they could do that by limiting "helping" SJ out with Karlsson. If SJ only retains 2.5m, they will get out of paying ~31m/39m of Karlsson's future salaries. Of course they are going to end up taking salaries back depending on who they get to free up the space for him. In my example, SJ is taking 1.4m in additional cap this year (frees up 2.5m next year, and then 9m for the next 3 years) , an additional 8.4m pro-rated in salaries on the season, and 7.5m in future salaries, so overall they are saving at least 15m in real dollars. Donskoi's 3.9m cap hit and salary don't need to be moved either, I'll probably edit it. The only cap pieces that really need to be there are probably Driedger+Schultz for 6.5m.
I'm thinking if they were to add Geekie that frees up a spot for Wright, and then they could add two 2nds or 3rds or something like that. It's going to be more quantity rather than quality. Ultimately, SEA isn't going to give up much. If they are giving up a 1st they would much rather probably pursue Klingberg I think.
Other teams probably need SJ to retain 30-50%, and who knows if they then also need to take bad contracts back. Karlsson is going to decide where he wants to go if he does, so it may require SJ to take on bad contracts too. They then get two 1sts in value max? Maybe less.
I think Karlsson would waive for them since, they are likely to be a team on the rise soon, no state tax, maybe he prefers to stay in the Pacific division too.
