Description
Watching Jarventie, Merilainen, Greig and Kleven at the Juniors its got me wondering where the 2020 draft could land compared to Ottawa's entire draft history. It's still early, but Ottawa's first seven picks in that draft all look good, with most of them comfortably projecting as NHL regulars, and so much upside beyond that especially in that 1st round of Stützle, Sanderson and Greig.

With that in mind, here are my picks for Ottawa's best drafts of all time.

Number 5: 1998
This draft didn't see any true star power, but Ottawa did land two 1000+ game players, both of whom were hugely important pieces for Ottawa. We'll ignore the mess that was the Mathieu Chouinard saga, and first focus on Ottawa's 2nd round pick, Mike Fisher. Fish played 1104 games across a career spanning 18 seasons, and he spent the majority of that time in Ottawa (675 games). Fish was never a star, but he was a prototypical 200ft 2C for most of his career. He could give you the production to hang in the top 6, and he was an incredible defensive specialist, receiving Selke votes seven times in his career including 5th and 3rd place finishes. The Other standout name from this draft is a far more important player to this team, Chris Neil. Everyone knows who Neiler was, he was one of the meanest ****s in the league at a time when there were enough mean ****s in the league for that to actually mean something. 1026 games, 250pts, 2522 PIMS tells you all to know about who he was as a player, but none of that comes close to the impact he's had in the Ottawa community. A truly beloved player and person.

Number 4: 1996
Sens got a lot of value out of this draft. We'll start with the obvious one, Sens picked 1st overall in 1996, and with that pick they drafted a player who would go on to lead the franchise in games played with 1179. The only TRUE Big Rig (Maroon and Oleksiak can get f*cked, they've got no business using the name), Phillips earned the nickname with his physical brand of defensive hockey. He was a truly great physical shutdown D, the kind every coach dreams about when they're alone at night.
Sens also picked up versatile forward Andreas Dackell in the 6th round. 613 games played (shout out the 613. iykyk), he brought a little bit of everything to the table and was a generally very useful guy to have. Sens also got Sami Salo in the 9th round (yeah, the 9th). Wasn't a Sen for long, but Canucks fans can tell you how good he was in his nearly 900 game career.

Number 3: 2020
This could obviously change, as all these players are just beginning their careers, but this is where I feel this draft is right now. Sens did incredibly well in 2020. It was iconic right from the start, when the late great Alex Trebek called out Tim Stützle's name in classic Jeopardy fashion, and the hits just kept coming from there. Stützle could be the best player in Sens history by the time he hangs em up imo, Jake Sanderson looks like he could be a true number 1 D, and Ridly Greig projects somewhere in the Pageau-Kadri-Marchand zone of talented ****s. And that's just the 1st round. Jarventie and Sokolov are both tall offensive wingers with really dangerous shots, Kleven is a freight train on skates, Merilainen is an interesting goalie prospect currently starting for his country at the WJC, and they even got a couple interesting bets in the 6th round in Daoust and Reinhardt. Still remains to be seen how everyone shakes out, but early returns are EXTREMELY good, especially considering how much was made about how Ottawa left so much talent on the table.

Number 2: 2001
Gonna switch up and go point form on this one because there are so many guys to hit on this one.
Jason Spezza- The best C Ottawa ever had by a pretty wide margin (until Tim Stützle beats him). Undeniably special talent. Undercut by the fact he decided to join the darkside. (1248 GP, 363G, 995P)
Tim Gleason- Forgot he was even drafted by Ottawa, but he got them Bryan Smolinski who was pretty dope. Pretty good little career as a blueliner. (727GP)
Ray Emery- RIP Rayzor... what an iconic player. He was the guy holding the bag after Hasek ****ed himself up, and he ran with it. Played 287 games and was an absolutely unhinged psychopath the whole way through.
Christoph Schubert- Underappreciated part of the cup final team, he carved out a nice NHL career for himself. (315GP)
Brooks Laich- 193rd overall, he was an excellent pick. Trading him for Peter Bondra is highly questionable in hindsight, but it ultimately got them 50in07 so... anyway he had a pretty awesome career for such a late pick. (776GP, 134G, 332P)
Brandon Bochenski - the OG UND Sens legend. He walked so Sanderson, Pinto, Bernard-Docker and Kleven could run.

Number 1: 1994
Not as many names to list as 2020 and 2001, but I mean, come on. Obviously this is the number one draft, they got Radek Bonk and Daniel Alfredsson. I'll start with Bonk, who is one of the more undervalued Sens of all time. He was absolutely awesome in his prime, and doesn't get enough respect. Played nearly 1000 games and just under 500 points. They also got Stanislav Neckar, who I won't even pretend to remember, but played over 500 games which is pretty solid. The crown jewel here is obviously Alfie. The best player in franchise history. 1246 games, 444G, 1157P, another 124GP in the playoffs and 51G, 100P there. One of most accomplished Swedish players in history. Lifelong Ottawan. The GOAT. enough said.

Honourable Mention: 2008
Could probably argue this one above one or two of the others tbh. Karlsson has a pretty strong case for being the most dominant Ottawa Senator of all time. He was absolute magic as Sen, and it's a shame that his time in San Jose has made people discredit how good he was. Sens also got Zack Smith, Mark Borowiecki, Derek Grant and Pat Wiercioch, which is a pretty good haul all things considered.
