Description
I'm still of the mindset that "fixing" the goaltending is a task for the offseason at the earliest. This past stretch can't really be levied on the netminders given the amount of defencemen we just had cycle through the infirmary.

Upgrading this team really comes in the form of making them more effective at 5v5: I don't know if Holland and the Oilers' brass can help themselves in regards to Chiarot, so I'm hoping they can net more out of that deal than just a big guy who can hit. I'd personally put my *maximum* on Chiarot at Lavoie and a 2nd round pick thus the surplus value between the 2022 picks, the extra 1st, a warm body, and a more reasonably-priced Kassian covers the tab on Toffoli. I'm probably ten cents short on the value, but I suspect for a franchise bound to be entrenched in at the very least a retool, the two firsts are the more desirable assets here and that the fact Kassian goes back to balance the books is ultimately negligible.

In the pursuit of taking more of Tippett's least-effective toys away, Edmonton picks up a short-term upgrade to the #4C role while Derek Ryan remembers that he's an NHL player. The third line could be spoiled with offensive-zone starts as the fourth line in this scenario probably tolerates defensive zone starts handily. Apparently Eakin can be had for free, so consider Eakin for Turris and Koekkoek for a 5th the framework of the deal.

Improved scoring up front by finding a more effective fit for Nugent-Hopkins' and Draisaitl's starboard side, bumping Yamamoto down the lineup, and reducing Chiarot's gaudy TOI hopefully provides all the fix this team needs to at least push through the Western Conference. Healthy Avalanche and Knights rosters post-deadline have me mildly concerned. The only thing really left to do for this team in the offseason is find a goaltender to tandem with Skinner (Varlamov please) and get Tippett and his staff (sans-Gulutzan) the hell out of Dodge. I really want to see what Woodcroft and Manson could do with the keys to the NHL roster.

Habs and Zack Kassian already have a controversial story that many have forgotten, and this is likely where the deal falls flat. That is unless Kassian is immediately dealt to another team, which is unlikely because the Habs aren't in any position to give up picks to dump him and Kassian would need more than a small resurgence for teams to give up assets for him.

I did forget about it but I think that speaks to the circumstance, regimes, and time that's passed since that fiasco. It's been nearly six years to the day and I suspect a lot of what happened was due to Kassian's substance abuse issues, not the person nor the player. Given that there's been a change in Montreal's management, Kassian does not hold a no-move clause, and that the man is thankfully healthy and sober, I can't really see why this deal would be rejected on the grounds of what happened in a time before McDavid was even in the league.

Granted, I'm a firm believer of time healing all wounds and I don't have the perspective that you, other Habs fans, or Kassian would hold regarding the scenario. It just seems off that the trade would be rejected by Gorton on such an intangible excuse.

If that's the case should a late pick be going back in exchange for Koekkoek alone?
