Description
Carter and Rust instantaneously solve this team's continuous 5v5 woes and gives Edmonton the best forward group in the league bar none. Ultimately, the trade hinges on the Penguins committing to a one-year retool due to their injuries, which I'm still not convinced is their plan. Arizona is paid to retain on Carter such that the Penguins can still retain on Letang and in the *very unlikely* circumstance they need to, Malkin.

I like De Haan's defensive numbers as much as I do Lindholm's; the advantage to working with Chicago is that Edmonton isn't forced into paying a division tax AND have the option to use the Keith conditions as an asset via guaranteeing the 2nd round pick. Anton and Calvin are shaping up to be the better options on the free agent market to pair with Barrie and I'd prefer if the Oilers moved quickly on one of the two rearguards.

I still stand by bringing Gagner back for the cup run. Safin's halfway out the organization anyways, see if Detroit wants him too. Turris is sent packing for equivalent talent, Billy Lagesson makes up for Seattle having to take on the extra cash.

Taking Hyman off the top powerplay unit keeps him fresh for the penalty kill; math suggests the Oilers powerplay is even more effective with Jesse playing ahead of Zach anyways. The Carter and Rust rentals also afford Edmonton a real, secondary powerplay unit and might help contribute to keeping Draisaitl's and McDavid's TOI just a touch shallower. All the kinds of moves that teams poised for deep playoff runs make to conserve their high-end talents.

Goaltending upgrades to maybe follow in the summer? Skinner's been playing reasonably well enough for him to warrant backup minutes next year. Probably hinges on Smith's health or Holland's willingness to ship Schmitty off in favour of a Varlamov-type.

So why does Detroit trade Gagner for a cap dump and a AHL player?

Does Detroit expect to get assets back for Gagner beyond what would be their 7th defender next year and a C-prospect? I still don't think the Red Wings make the playoffs this spring, so your hesitation doesn't make any real sense.

I'm not flipping Koekkoek as a cap dump here: Edmonton would lose him or another player to waivers if they did upgrade their blueline. Might as well get some form of asset out of him.

?

How is koekkeok a "cap dmp" when he earns 925k

Safin is a '99 birthday still definitely a prospect

Are you talking about the McCormck return

Part of that trade that I don't discuss is the percentage of Turris' deal that Edmonton would still be on the hook for if they buried Turris. It still needs to be shed to be cap-compliant after all the other moves made. McCormick is having a productive AHL season and the Oilers could certainly have more here, but Turris has such limited value anyways that it's really more just Lagesson for McCormick.

William hasn't been great for the Condors this season and hasn't been able to find any chemistry with any of the Bakersfield defenders. More scoring up front only helps if/once Marody is moved.

Koekkoek isn't an upgrade over any of Detroit's defensemen.

The return I was expecting was a 4th or a 5th. Gagner is a 4th line player with 6 points in 14 games. and that is the same amount of points as your 3rd and 4th lines combined.
