Description

Keep seeing the “Dermott to NYI” trade in Leafs ACGMs and I always kinda blow them off because Leafs fans just dump whoever on us and it’s cool….

However, I’ve been thinking about this one a little more lately and I been wondering if it could be good for us. Dermott is still young, put up strong defensive metrics every year of his career and is on a pretty good contract for the next two years. I haven’t watched him play a ton, so I don’t have a good sense of his play style and I’ve heard from Leafs fans that his consistency and decision-making hasn’t always been the best….which were basically the same overarching issues we had with Nick Leddy….

My concerns with Dermott, based on what I do know are 1. A lack of offense and 2. The low hockey IQ and bad decision-making. However, he’s more of a known commodity than Hickey or Aho are as of now, one of whom is being penciled into the 2LD spot as of now. So I’m curious to know what other Isles fans (or whoever) think. Honestly, I really want to give Sebastian Aho some run in that position, so I’d need some convincing, but there are worse options I suppose.

Also we have a lot of cap space, with or without Komarov….

I like dermott but only as a 3rd pair guy. I think a
Dermott-Mayfield 3rd pair would be awesome. They'd fit perfectly and would be a decent 2nd pair playing 3rd for ~3 million for 2 years.
Also why move Leo and bellows if we have all that cap space. Leo is overpaid but he's still useful and bellows is a decent prospect that we lose for no reason.

I’m with you. Mayfield, imo, is a 3rd pairing defenseman himself but he fits the system well enough that he works on the 2nd pair. Maybe you get that with Dermott; maybe not. But if not, that 2nd pair is just as questionable as it was last season, which is something I think they really needed to improve this offseason

Dermott is smart imo. He has one bonehead play in the playoffs and he's been improving every year again imo. I think he's better at being the defensive pair on his line (very small sample size) as for value I have no clue.

He's not a cap dump but what excatly do you give to get a guy who pays a little 2nd pair and mostly 3rd pair and a little 7d?

2nd or 3rd rounder I would say, especially if the Isles were to see him as a second pair guy. Hasn’t proven himself in that kind of role yet, so there’s too much risk to justify giving any more than that imo.

I considered adding Bellows or Aho into the trade, but I didn’t think Toronto had any need for them, especially Bellows

Dermott is good at defending the rush. He can kill penalties if you need him to. He can move the puck ok.
