Description
Disclaimer: not a Leafs fan.

I think trading Marner is impetuous and silly. I didn't care for a lot of the Leafs' deployment this offseason but losing such a key piece in Tavares to injury can't always be anticipated. I think the bottom-six needed better options. Galchenyuk is probably more a flash in the pan than anything, and tying the Leafs' wagon to him seems desperate.

A flat-cap world for possibly the next 5 seasons (jfc) means moves need to happen in a money-in-money-out fashion as much as possible. Hopefully my trades reflect this. Like many top-heavy teams I wanted to find a higher-calibre #3C for the Leafs: Washington probably has more utility for a winger to pair with McMichael and is going to highly value Liljegren as their system lacks a decent RHD prospect. To balance, a B-prospect RW goes back to Toronto. Coincidentally, it's ones with ties to the city. Key point here is that it's a money-in-money-out trade. Engvall is shipped out in order to acquire a quality backup with term with the money being equal for both sides. However, because the Leafs' remaining cap hit comes in just under a league-minimum contract, I have them retaining an extra $33K. Dallas has a need to jettison Khudobin for either expansion or prior to next season as Bishop is going to be difficult to move and Oettinger is their future in net. Engvall might be a marginal piece but this trade facilitates Dallas' needs without affecting their bottom line. If the Stars need more it has to be a pick in 2023.

Draft-day trades are just anticipation of Dubas recouping picks. To think like thy enemy is to know thy enemy.

My justification for moving Liljegren simply comes from the philosophy of doing everything possible to win now. Eller is a substantial #3C with term and PK utility. Lilypad might have been a full-time Leaf if Bogosian hadn't have performed excellently. With Brodie and Holl occupying top-four roles for the next 2 seasons, it's hard to justify his place on the roster when it can be replaced year-over-year by cheaper suitors.

This past year's roster was supposed to be better. Dubas isn't the problem, albeit overpaying for Marner is starting to look ghastly right about now. I don't know if Keefe is the problem: he's Kyle's guy and the Leafs were great right up until their final three games with him at the helm. If anything I suppose the problem is psychological. Big parts of this club have been a part of three game 7 collapses now. There's a monkey on their backs. Rielly and the big three should probably make a point of going to a shrink to exercise those demons as a part of their offseason plans. If they can get their heads right there's no excuse for the Leafs to not be a top club in the Atlantic. They've taken their bumps, now it's just a matter of getting over the hump, and I think this team can do it.

My guess is Amirov and Hallander replace Goodrow and Mikhiyev next year. Anderson or Clarke likely replaces Spezza. What happens to this team beyond that is a mystery. Rielly maybe extends if his ask is at or under $7M. Above and the Leafs are forced into moving on.

Trading Marner for the sake of trading Marner is silly, but Dubas would be a fool to not entertain the idea and see what's out there.

Sure, but are you getting equivalent value? He's probably already at his lowest value and picks/prospects aren't helping the Leafs win today. Moving a top-5 forward just seems like bad practice in general.

That's for Dubas to decide, and then act accordingly. I also don't think picks/prospects are likely to be a major part of any deal. With the money involved, you're probably looking at player for player(s). However, even if they were, corresponding moves are always an option. Picks/prospects won't help them today, but what they can be moved for would.
