Description
2021 NHL Draft:
#4. (LD) Simon Edvinsson (Frolunda, SHL)
#20 (via NAS). (RC) Xavier Bourgault (Shawinigan, QMJHL)

My philosophy, whenever possible, was to avoid bottom-of-the-roster pieces and wholly avoid selecting UFAs. If Seattle wants to look to be competitive, then a team of primarily second- and third-line forwards backed by competent defending and goaltending is more than sufficient enough to at least make the playoffs in the paper-thin Pacific. If no such piece was made available - or a better prospect / long-term piece was available - then building for the future remains a mandate Seattle should emphasize more than Vegas did. I think the options are not quite as sexy as what Vegas had available to them.

Unless the side-deal or Seattle-bound trade makes a boatload of sense, I've opted to just take the player of most interest to the Kraken.

I think this setup finds a nice balance between competitive and building for the future: should disaster strike and the Kraken look to be sellers come the deadline, there's a multitude of pieces here that can be sold for 2nd and 3rd round picks. I'm still a big believer in Bellows, and the remainder of the AHL-bound pieces have varying degrees of NHL talent that suppose a bright future in Seattle is very possible.

Constructive feedback is very welcome: I'm not super intimate with a lot of protection lists nor other shrewd side deals teams will make in order to prevent a key piece from being selected during expansion. If you want a pick rationalized, just ask and I'll oblige.

I'm predicting Detroit to make a move to acquire Skjei pre-Expansion and given other selections the Kraken should have no interest in Gardiner

Likewise, I'd like to see Yzerman snag Graves. Both moves were something I discussed as really good for the current Red Wings and can't see one of the league's smartest GMs passing on.

Typically, I'd agree with you, but you have to consider how absolutely weak the Pacific is going to be next year. The rebuilding Kings are projected to be in a battle with the Flames or Canucks for the 4th seed. Anaheim and San Jose are in shambles. If Calgary opts to retool or either of the Canucks or Kings have a setback, it's miles of open highway for the Kraken.

If CGY gives up any assets to steer Seattle away from Gio, I will be slightly annoyed.

It's a tough thing to expose your captain, but they should and they should also be ok with Seattle taking him. Easiest way to shakeup the team.

The returns for your capdumps is way too low.

Based on the Marleau dump 4-5M = 1st. And the price should be higher with the flat cap.

Anyway, teams learned from the Vegas draft and will keep their futures.

IMO, take the money to make a sweep on the UFA market instead and let the other teams struggle with their own cap. You'll end up with a far better team than this.

I don't disagree with the notion that names like Burns could be had for more. I think Duchene and Voracek have enough value over at least the next 3 years to suggest that a major return isn't completely necessary. Stralman probably fetches more too.
