Description
They probably already have a deal but if they didn't.
Protected.
Crosby...Obviously
Malkin..Obviously
Jake Obviously
Rust Cleary.
Kap Clearly
Blueger. He's the 3C they have been looking for for some time. He's not going anywhere.
Zucker.... He keeps producing 5v5 goals with little time on the PP. If they could realistically get better with the cap hit they would move him, but as of right now, his 5v5 play keeps him here.
Defense
Letang Clearly
Dumo. Clearly
MP, they trust him more than Matheson. He doesn't bleed goals.
Marino is not available
Ceci will be a FA.
Goalie
Jarry

A lot of people want to protect McCann. I don't see it. 4 5v5 goals in 37 games does not scream keep me at 3 mil per. A year ago McCann was on the verge of breaking out. Now he's just regressing. You just can't get more than 50% of your goals from the PP and claim to be an effective player. Something there just does not match.

So here is the deal, what is the cost to protect what is left.
Frankly, I think they are indifferent if they lose Carter and I don't think Seattle wants him anyway.
Matheson they are free to take, no one will stop them. He's a decent enough player, but the penguins have depth there.

I like ZAR but his time here has probably run out. They need bigger players in their bottom 6. He's clearly NHL quality and a good player. But he needs to be on a 3rd line somewhere not on a 4th line which needs some bulk. There is only so much room. I think one way or another ZAR is probably going to be off the team next year. They need to make room. Something has to give. They could trade him if not selected and get back something decent, maybe a young RD who knows.

That leaves you Tanev and McCann.
Tanev is a guy I think they would like to keep. The question is how much is he worth.
I think the hardest part of Seattle taking Tanev is the contract. He's 30 next year. With 4 years left. I'm gonna say there are just as many good years as there are bad years left on that deal. I'd hate to see him go but team wise, I don't think it's an awful loss. I think years 32-33 probably chase Seattle away from a guy like Tanev. He's not an overly big guy and he plays a heavy game. He's also reliant on his speed. None of that bodes well for his final years. If you are building a team from scratch right now, I'm not sure you want to take that on.
That leaves McCann. I have to admit, I really want to see Seattle take Matheson for cap reasons. But if McCann is the guy to go, I'm not all that broken up about it. You win games 5v5, And while he's managing to do that on the ice while he's out there, the goals just aren't there.
It also dose not help him that he lacks size when they need to get bigger in their bottom 6.

This team has a whole list of potential players to come in next year. Poulin, Caulfield, OConnor even Legare.
What do you do with these guys?
In order to bring in new blood old blood has to leave.
You got Zucker and McCann as the two I think people debate the most on protecting. One is producing 5v5 the other isn't. I think I know which one I'd keep.

So what do you give up to protect a Tanev or McCann. I have to be honest when I say, not much. If they lose one they lose one.
At 3-3.5 million I think either is replaceable on the open market.

Zucker over McCann? I highly doubt it. Zucker is on the 3rd line making $5.5.. we could use his cap so much better. He just hasnt been a fit here.

Using the 5v5 comparisons you would find that McCann has a similar goal scoring rate to Rust, but with better playmaking ability. He is also a very good defensive player and that shows through his scoring effects. SCF% and HDCF% are in the top 3 among Pens forwards. He's very good and still quite young. Letting him walk would be a huge mistake. I'd rather expose Zucker's contract.

Trade for Zucker was a big mistake, and give up anything to protect him, would be even worse. You mentioned Caulfield a few times however, they haven't signed him yet, actually none of the college players, I am a bit nervous about that.

they have plenty of time to sign caulfield. That's not really an issue.
Trading for Zucker is what it is. It was a late round pick and an over rated defensive prospect. So it is what it is.
But losing him for nothing to keep a guy who isn't really meeting his potential isn't a smart move..

No he doesn't. You can't just make up stats here dude. We all have access to them. just sit down with this make believe nonsense.

Zucker is still producing more 5v5 than McCann. You can sit here and try to justify it. But at the end of the day, you have to produce 5v5. That's the measure of players.
McCann simply isn't getting it done. One guy is giving you something and playing fairly decently, the other is stepping out on the ice night after night and not producing anything in 5v5 play.
You aren't winning like that. If that's what Seattle wants, be my guest. I'm more than willing to part ways with a 3mil guy not playing well 5v5. We can do better there. Lets not try to make him something he isn't. This is no surprise. This is his 3rd team, where every time, he looks like maybe he's figured it out....only to no have figured it out. The stripes don't change.
