I am loving all this hockey talk. So here is an idea. I doubt Yzerman allows this to happen but after seeing Mantha as a healthy scratch, I thought to give this a shot. I should have added, Danault agrees to sign long term with Detroit to give them protection that he does not walk at seasons end.

Mantha starts with Caufield + 1st round pick. Detroit doesn't need a pending UFA vet (they could sign for free this off-season if they wanted to), an overpaid 4th liner, or 2 mid round picks.

You wouldn't get Kotkaniemi. He's an already established NHL player that has more value than Mantha. Poehling could be had, but he shouldn't be the main prospect. Caufield fits Detroits timeline for a rebuild, so he'd be the start. Maybe closer with Caufield, Poehling, and a 1st. Could add more to both sides. Both Kotkaniemi is far out of the question.

not sure about awful. Danault is a selke contention player which Yzerman loves. Put him with offensive wingers and you have a solid line. The last 3 years he has been in the top 3 best lines in the NHL 5 on 5. Byron has speed to burn that is buried on a deep MTL roster. He can be a solid 3rd line guy that can give you 15 to 22 goals on a full season. Then you add the two draft picks, which can be upgraded.
