Description
General Idea:

Retooling of the bottom 6 and the blue line.

Addition of the KHL imports in the high-energy, high skill Barabanov, and the smooth-skating, competitive, and barn burning blue liner Lehtonen, who is billed as being able to play on either the left or the right side. I can see Barabanov playing an energy/skill role on either line 3 or 4 if he's as good as billed, and might be able to take a bumper position on PP2 or play on the right side of the umbrella/overload half wall.

Alex Pietrangelo is just a stud who's good at everything. If he wants more than $8.75 million or more term it's completely doable (just cut the necessary dollar amount from the scratched players, or add more years as long as it's not ridiculous). He partially addresses the defensive liability aspect of the Leafs, as well as providing more offense than a Dylan DeMelo or Chris Tanev type - and while the Leafs have Rielly, more offense from the Blueline, like the Stars, Lightning, or Avalanche have, can't be undersold. Petro can effectively drive offense and feed the forwards, while providing the defensive responsibility the team needs, while also providing even more leadership.

The addition of Derick Brassard is to add another C (can never have too many) who has skill and can add some defensive/hitting ability to the team. I don't want to add guys that are over the hill or just hit, they have to be able to play. Brassard can do it all, and while I'm unsure this cap hit will necessarily be sufficient, the term of 3 years might be more than other teams are willing to offer. He can also play left or right wing, and you can put him on a different type of line with Barabanov and Bennett (BBB line) for a great energy line that can really forecheck.

Other UFA signings include bringing back Spezza if he's still around and bringing on a guy like Joe Thornton or Brian Boyle for defensive ability on the 4th line, or, if neither are available, you can bring on a guy like Koivu if he'll come, or just plop on someone like Gauthier. It's not a big deal for the 4C (could just be Spezza), but if Thornton doesn't retire and would be interested in a cup run, his defensive numbers are still good and I think he'd be a good anchor on the 4th line. I also think it'd be cool to Spezza and Thornton on the ice at the same time :^).

The trade of Andersen hurts, and is literally just for cap savings. It's based on the rumour that the Canes are looking for a tendie upgrade. I've always liked Reimer and think retained salary (to allow space for scratches) or a 2nd round pick for Andersen makes sense. I think a tandem of Campbell and Reimer would be sufficient to go deep in the playoffs with the other upgrades.

The Bennett-Kerfoot trade is summed up pretty well by Jamiepo's https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/368890, and is something I've mocked up too. Could make sense for both teams, and I've always liked Bennett's clutch ability in the playoffs, overall game, and potential. I see him either playing with Tavares, playing in a 3C or 3W role, or playing 4th line wing. Could play PP, could play PK, doesn't matter. He's great.

Engvall is a cap casualty in a way, but getting something back for him in Mason Marchment is good. He's gritty and has an outside shot at making the lineup, or being a replacement in case of injury or Spezza or Thornton needing a rest day because they're older. Petan or Brooks or whoever else can also fill in depending on good of a year they're having or the matchup.

Johnsson... team doesn't matter. Just whoever will pay the highest. If Leafs can get another 1st by trading him I'd laugh happily, but I'll put a 2nd just to make people not mad haha (and because a 1st is an overpay).

This team is still in cap hell but it has a better chance of winning for sure. A crazy trade or two would have to take place to avoid the cap hell (and ahead of the Seattle draft), but that's a first world type of problem for an NHL team.

I think Dermott-Holl on bottom pairing is cool. Holl is a good defenseman, and so is Dermott (who I think should take a QO and bet on himself), but I don't think a contender has them above the 3rd pairing.

With Pietrangelo, Rielly, and Muzzin, you could also try putting them all on different lines for a constant defensive presence. Doesn't matter too much.

Mikheyev value and term is pretty flexible.

Rodrigues idk bro.

Idk what else to say, but I hope Luke Schenn gets a cup ring. I'd have him back in Toronto as a depth D or Marlies guy :^)

I also just think he could make it, or has a good AHL season and gets traded to a team looking for depth or who is a believer in untapped scoring ability. Especially if his skating improves, guys have to look out for him when he steps on the ice.

If Bennett out of Calgary gets rumoured enough, eventually you start speculating about it. I wouldn't do it if I were Calgary either, but that's the beauty of it.
