Description
Assume most everything goes according to plan as the kids get to play and play about as well as they've been doing lately. Moves will be made come the trade deadline to acquire value for veterans that could help another team's playoff run while not really having a future in Philly due to some young rising stars displacing the vets over the course of the season. Hexy has shown a preference for stocking draft picks and being a strategic deadline seller (i.e. Timonen, Coburn). I expect the expansion draft and salary cap will prompt the Flyers to be active deadline sellers. Specifically, Ghost, Laughton, Cousins, Mason, Neuvirth and Del Zotto all need new deals. The latter three are all UFAs. With respect to which specific defensive prospects move into the lineup by the deadline, it's guesswork at this point, but there will be opportunity for at most 2 besides Provorov who may start in the NHL to begin the season.

  1. Read, Matt
Détails additionnels:
Lavy likes and trusts Matt Read as a responsible two way top 9 forward who excels on the PK and is a shorthanded threat to score in transition. For a playoff run plus a year on top, Nash gets good value for a future 3rd rounder. If Read returns to peak 20g form, this could be a 2nd. Despite a drop in shooting percentage and production the past season and a half, Read starts his shifts in the defensive zone far more often than not, against strong competition, and still drives possession forward. His availability is due to expansion draft considerations, not his contract.

  1. Streit, Mark
Détails additionnels:
Streit is an offensive defenseman who quarterbacks the powerplay. This trade nets Dallas some depth in that regard for a deep playoff run. If Klingberg handles the first unit, Streit makes your second PP unit instantly a threat. Look closely at his stats the past 2 seasons and you can see clearly the shift to higher defensive zone starts has hurt him. He needs to be used as an offensive defenseman to be most effective, but is capable of logging 20 minutes or more a night and about half a point per game pace if used correctly. Dallas has the depth to do this, whereas Philly does not. Philly will deal Streit to a playoff buyer in the West unless Streit falls off the age cliff before that can happen.

  1. Del Zotto, Michael
  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2017 (NYI)
Détails additionnels:
Del Zotto has been found gold for the Flyers. He signed as a free agent and has vaulted to top pairing both out of necessity and as earned by his performance. Last season his possession metrics were godlike for significant stretches. His best use is as a two way defenseman, as he has improved far beyond the defensive liability he was in his early days with the Rangers and Predators. Expect modest point production but excellent workhorse 20 plus minute defensive performances. Flames will be a great opportunity for Del Zotto to settle into a top 4 role long term. His availability is chiefly due to salary cap concerns as he is a pending free agent, and between he and offensive dynamo Shayne Gostisbehere, the latter is going to get the mega contract from the Flyers barring a dramatic regression in play this season.

I'd definitely do that as a Flames fan but not at the trade deadline, who knows if Del Zotto will sign with us or not.

Don't think we will get that high of picks for rental players in Streit and del zotto (can't play a full year)

Good points, all. Remember Timonen was dealt for a 2nd and a conditional pick that also turned into a 2nd. Coburn went for a 1st and Gudas, but still had term on his deal. For instance, Calgary's second 2nd round pick could be conditional on Del Zotto signing an extension. The Streit deal's 3rd rounder could be conditional on his playoff usage and team advancement like in the Timonen trade.
