Description
The trade at the time looked really questionable. Why drop 20 spots in the draft to acquire Ryan Reaves? And on top of that... why on EARTH draft Lauzon at 51st overall when he was ranked at #143 overall by Central Scouting. If the Pens drafted Studnika or Ian Mitchell it would've looked a lot better.

As the trade aged it just got worse and worse. At the time, Sundqvist never projected to become a legit NHL player yet now hes a solid third liner. The 51st overall pick (Zach Lauzon) had concussion issues and was forced to retire. Ryan Reaves was a flop in Pittsburgh. Finally, Klim Kostin looks like a very solid forward prospect and has a legitimate chance of going pro. Thats why I view this as the worst move Rutherford has made. While Johnson signing is a close second, at least we didn't trade assets for him. Not one part of this trade has worked out for pit and St Louis made out like bandits. Also, for simplify im assuming that the Pens would've drafted Kostin, but I think its very possible if they kept 31st overall they would've drafted Timmons or Hauge, both infinitely better than Lauzon. Kostin could've developed into a great winger for either Sid or malkin though.

Sundqvist had decent underlying numbers from what i remember. I wanted Buffalo to pick him up, he was being traded on here for nothing

From a pure trade point of view and remove the excess reasons. Kessel did score 82 points before getting traded for Galy who scored 17 in an albeit shorter stint.

kessel trade was not bad at all for pit. Malkin wanted kessel gone, and kessel would only play in Arizona. Pens backs were against the wall and Kessel hit a decline so quick. He was great for us but he was never in good shape his whole career so once he started hitting his mid 30's, his game declined big time. In order to have a successful career as you get older you gotta keep your body in great physical shape and thats not Kessel. Im just glad we cleared the cap space. If POJ turns into a legit NHLer its just a bonus. The max points I see Kessel scoring now is around 50 and horrible defensively. Not worth 6.8 million
